That's great Alan, thanks for finding the link, I couldn't remember where that was posted!
I hope Paul finds all the info you have for him - I'm sure he'll be really chuffed
Best wishes, Billiegirl

Re: Pitnacree House - Menzies / Stewarts / Jamaica
Hello Paul, I was researching Pitnacree Lodge quite a while back, which I believe is the house you're referring to. If it is, my people were staying there in 1805, so it seems it was standing earlier than you thought. In 1809 there was an advert "To Let Furnished" in the Caledonian Mercury (Thursday...

Re: Occupation S.C.F
Could the last word possibly be Fireman? One of my relatives is down as "fireman in foundry".

Re: Death of John Campbell Master Mariner
Hi Clancam, sorry I'm not in Scotland, but I had a similar situation with my gt gt uncle James Campbell who disappeared after the 1871 census from Newcastle on Tyne. I eventually found that he'd died in Aceh in 1873, from the Registers of Wages and Effects of Deceased Seamen (BT 153) which I accesse...

Re: Where is RITTMORE in Argyll?
Thanks so much Sarah, Russell and Andrew - gives me a bit more to work with. Yes, a beautiful part of the world, hope to make it over there one day.
Just wanted to mention, Ancestry is free for the next 2 or 3 days.
Wishing everyone a wonderful Christmas and a very Happy New Year!

Re: Where is RITTMORE in Argyll?
Sorry Sarah - I think I need new glasses! Having had a better look at it, the merchant seamen are all from Greenock (I thought some said Greenwich). It could be a K instead of a R. There is a line through the middle of the entire word, so it could be Killmore - a misspelling of Kilmore? Any idea whi...

Re: Where is RITTMORE in Argyll?
Hi Sarah, yes, it looks like a general register of merchant seamen which includes those ticketed in other places besides Greenock, so its probably a transcription from the original record, which I haven't seen. It definitely looks like Rittmore on this one, and FMP has transcribed it as such, too. M...

Where is RITTMORE in Argyll?
Hello and Season's Greetings to everyone on Talking Scot!
I have a merchant seaman's listing which says the subject was born in Rittmore, Argyll.
I've done a search but nothing comes up for it at all. I think I need some local knowledge, can anyone help?

Re: A & J Adie Jute Factory, DUNDEE
Thanks so much for that, Alan. Quite a hefty fine for those days, and an amusing day in court by the looks of it. I'll have to do further research on the two Alexanders mentioned but I'm pretty sure the ship's carpenter is mine. An intriguing insight into day to day life in Dundee at that time. If I...

Re: A & J Adie Jute Factory, DUNDEE
Hi Alan, and thanks once again for those links - I have the cow in the shop one, and also an assault in 1868, but would be interested in the 1870 Sabbath trading trial of Jane, the graving dock accident and also the death of Alexander Leuchars, flesher, if you don't mind, and have the time. What's a...
