Re: Horseman D Whitton died 20-10-1916 aged 29 on SS Cabotia

Hi Alan Grrr!! Should have known it wouldn't be that easy. I'd assumed the Scottish Dundee because the Marine Returns give place of birth as well as last residence. The page on which D. Whitton is listed shows a number of people who were not born in Britain and they are all merely listed by country ...

Re: Horseman D Whitton died 20-10-1916 aged 29 on SS Cabotia

A David Whitton, aged 29, is shown on the Marine Returns on Scotlands People. Looking at births in Angus 1886-1888 there are only 2 David Whittons, one born St Clements, which is one of the Dundee registration districts, and one born in Arbroath. I took a punt and looked at the Dundee birth. David W...

Re: Garland family from Old Machar Aberdeen

Have you looked at Thomas & Jane's marriage certificate? Marriage certificates usually give quite a bit of information including parents names (including the mother's maiden name), father's occupation and whether the parents are deceased at the time of the marriage. You can see certificates from 185...

Re: Auld Scots

Aw tae one side like Gourock. Yer hems aw heughs and howes (girlie one that!). Sapple. I'd get a skelp & had a shed.

Living in London we puzzled people by "doing the dishes" instead of washing up or going a message instead of shopping.

Brilliant Quote

Loved this quote on the Edinburgh City Libraries Facebook page advertising their Family History Day (see Andrew's post in Events).

"If you think your family is normal, you are probably not a genealogist"! How true.

Ambrotypes & conservation

I have some old photos, ambrotypes I think but on glass anyway. I took them to WDYTYA at the SEC in Glasgow yesterday to see if there was anyone who could help me date them & work out how to preserve them. In the seeming absence of any expert I had a helpful chat with a conservation person from the ...

Re: Janet Aitken Reid DOD 28 02 1883 - Glasgow

I suggest you try looking for merely Janet Reid - quite often the middle name did not appear on the b.c. The one that looks most likely, given the d.o.b., is the Janet Reid born in Calton because the certificate number is relatively low.
