Re: Re:
Obviously I don't have local knowledge (wrong continent) but I have been researching the Thomsons in that area. My great-grandfather was the head gardener at Calderwood Castle which I believe is not too far away from Mains Castle. Hi Mary Ellen I have just started researching my family tree and am ...

Re: Bible as Traditional Wedding Gift?
Wonderfully helpful! Thank you both. I haven't had reason to post on TS for some time, but as I hoped, two of the "usual suspects" who are so knowledgeable chimed in quickly with what I needed. It may, indeed, have been a gift from the church, since they both spent their entire lives in Dalserf and ...

Bible as Traditional Wedding Gift?
Just throwing this out to find if there's any tradition attached to it. I was recently bequeathed by a distant relative a lovely 2-volume Bible that belonged to my great-great grandparents who lived in Dalserf, Lanarkshire. The volumes are about 4x6 inches, leather bound, gold-leafed edges and it is...

Re: Mary Roy Sinclair mystery
Gary,
Ancestry family trees have a Search function within each tree (upper right). You just put in the name you are looking for and it goes right to it. That should save you lots of effort. Good luck.

Re: Pre WWI Rifleman
Thanks, Andrew. Would a volunteer battalion not see active duty unless called upon in times of trouble? Similar to US National Guard? I know nothing about non-US military.

Pre WWI Rifleman
I would be happy to do my own research if only some kind expert will tell me where to begin and hopefully interpret the information I have. Here's what I have: 1 photograph of a fine looking military man with the following written on it (probably by his civilian wife): "Sergt John B. Thomson Sr. 2nd...

Re: Post-1855 Largo Cemetery
Never give up! This is now "completed." I started this search in 2009 and eventually obtained a photo of the gravestone from someone on Rootschat. The photo supported the headstone inscription posted earlier in this thread. Last week (having decided that Isabella might be there even if not named on ...

We're having a ball off-line, Sarah. Will post a success story once the smoke clears. Have been looking for them for years!
