Many thanks to Annette and Sarah for such rapid responses. I have followed up the leads you gave but have not got much further. As you say the "Orphans" may have indeed been illegitimate. Can anyone decipher where Elisabeth (or Eli[z]abeth) McGawn was born as mentioned in 1871 census?
