Re: corrected entry on birth cert

I wondered if her mother would give you a clue.

Helen Jane Scott Dewar died aged 80 and married Archibald Hay in 1901.
I would have thought that the little girl was adopted by the Davidsons and they organised a name change.

Re: Ona DRAGOON - a curiosity

Ah I'm glad one of them lived to a ripe old age.

Wildcards didn't pick up on that variation. I had thought Wincas was Vincent, hadn't thought of William.

Re: Ona DRAGOON - a curiosity

Wonder if there is anything in the newspapers that might explain something? MorayLass, there's just too many possible variations of the name spelling/mistranscription to even begin! I did discover that there were 6 children's birth registered in Bellshill under the surname ULEVITCH Wincas 1904, Mad...

Re: Ona DRAGOON - a curiosity

Ah well - I was hoping for a Stage Name or something more exotic [alien] It intrigued me enough to do a little digging anyway. There are very few DRAGOON entries on SP Joseph Dragoon living in 20 Double Row Bellshill in both 1915 and 1920 William Dragoon at 40 Muirpark Bellshill in 1915 and a Charle...

Ona DRAGOON - a curiosity

It's been very quiet on Talking Scot - either we are all getting on famously tracing our 'lang died yins' or we've given up in despair! So I thought I'd throw a curious discovery out for interest. The top entry of a page of Deaths I was looking at [Maria Phillips/Burn was my interest] caught my eye!...

Re: Can't find birth record

So he would be just 12/13 when his mother died, that's reason enough to go to his Aunt's, if his father was working in the hotel trade and unsocial hours.

Re: Can't find birth record

I tried cross-referencing the 1916 births with deaths. Managed to find the deaths in Scotland for all but 4: George Francis McKenzie born 1916 St Giles [Edinburgh] Francis George McLachlan born 1916 Balmaghie - that's Dumfriesshire George Francis Smith born in Calton Glasgow Francis George who was r...

Re: Can't find birth record

Another longshot - school records? I used them to confirm where my Granda lived when he went to school - maybe easy for me as I knew the school. If they are his sisters he'd probably have gone to the same primary as they did. Should give the parents name and date of birth. That's an interesting ide...
