He's a bit of a man of mystery is he not. Does not even seem to know where he was born. Aberdeenshire Archives are probably your best bet.

Re: James Black b Coldstream
Nice one Annette. I think that James was a very naughty boy and appears to have come by his just deserts!! Who was the informant on his DC? Someone from the poorhouse?

Re: James Black b Coldstream
Hi Annette I think the James Wallace born in Coldstream was discharged in 1901. Perhaps he stayed in South Africa (if he was there). That would account for any disappearance. My understanding of the record suggests that this James was in the Army before. Is there any evidence that James Black was ev...

Re: Can anyone help me with a rough family history?
Hello HaggieNZ Welcome to TS. There are a number of records for the surname Haggie on the Scotland's People website. Fortunately, not enough to make searching difficult. However apart from one family who appear to have moved from Fife to Caithness most are in the area around Glasgow and Edinburgh or...

Re: James Black b Coldstream
I've tried comparing the signatures on the enlistment record with the birth certificates of Rachel and Alexander but have not come to a conclusion. On the enlistment record James has an open topped a which can't be seen on the birth records but the comparative size of the letters is about the same.....

Re: James Black b Coldstream
Hi Annette
I find the army pension record a bit confusing as it says he was discharged in 1915 aged 48 at which time he would actually have been 60. Do you think someone would have stayed in the Army to that age? Given the age on enlistment it otherwise looks a good possibility .

Re: James Black b Coldstream
Possibly he did. I take it that you have looked at the passenger lists to see if he is on them. Is there any sign of a bigamous marriage anywhere as that can explain a disappearance. Sometimes people did just head off and desert their family and this may well be what he did. Anne PS Have you looked ...

Re: James Black b Coldstream
This may not help much but there is a tree on Ancestry which states that Rachel married Alexander Stewart in 1909. Having looked at the record this would seem to be the case and on her marriage certificate she gives her mother Jeanie Blyth as deceased but not her father James Black. Do you know wher...

Re: Unsure of her parents c1838
I tend to stick to distant rellies, e.g. children of siblings and their descendents. That can provide endless hours of entertainment.
BTW I think that Catherine was probably born around 1828 and just kept shaving years off her age.
