Hi Maceill,
You are right to wonder... sounds too much like a possible hoax. I'd not do anything until you hear more about it. Maybe someone will come along soon who knows what's going on, but since the board is so quiet, I thought I'd at least acknowledge your post... (where IS everybody? Is there a TS party somewhere we didn't hear about?)

Cheers,
Sarah

Hi!
I got one of those E-mails too. I deleted it and banned any future contact from the site.

Maybe it was an over-reaction, but I didn't like it. It certainly smelled of a hoax to me.

I received the email too. There is a similar discussion on RC and apparently it's genuine according to the Irish website.
I'll check it out eventually.

Hi all,

I get those type emails regularily supposedly from eBay, PayPal, etc. If the website is password protected, then the only way that you should ever change anything is by going directly to the website and signing in to your account. NEVER, EVER, CLICK ON A LINK TO ACCESS YOUR ACCOUNT!!!

In fact, if you're really worried, close your browser, wait a couple of minutes, then reconnect and go to the website directly and sign in.

If it is the same message I received then it refers only to the IFHF site
A breach of security has recently occurred on BRS Genealogy / Roots Ireland which hosts the IFHF site (www.rootsireland.ie), in response to which all necessary defensive measures have been taken. In the breach part of the database which includes our member’s usernames, email addresses and passwords was accessed. This triggered a series of steps that has resulted in us sending you this warning email.

No data relating to your online payment transactions (credit or debit card details) was on these servers. Please be assured that we do NOT store credit card details or any payment details. Nothing of that nature is held on our site and as a result such data is not at risk. All payments are handled by a secure payment gateway Realex (http://www.realex.ie/).

Looks like it's true.

There's an article about it here http://scottishancestry.blogspot.com/
