Hi Jane,
Wouldn't it be lovely if we are related? Unfortunately I don't think we are, or if we are it is even more distant than you thought.
James Richmond's brothers were Robert, Joseph Bond, William and Nathaniel. They were all born in Cockerham, Lancashire, to William Richmond and Sarah, msn Bond.
I latched on to the name Thomasin too, and found it repeated in Cockerham a few generations back, but it all got very complicated and as she was a step relation, (James's daughter by his first wife Elizabeth Harrison) I sort of let it drop.
Of couse there are cousins to think about, and James did name one of his sons Thomas, which he might have done for a cousin he was close to.
Unfortunately, whenever I try to find out more from the Lancashire end, I find someone who has James married to someone totally different, and staying in the area all his life.
Sorry if I haven't been of much help, and even complicated matters further. It would be nice to be able to sort it all out though, wouldn't it?
Best regard
Ann

Re: Help!!!
Oh well, so much for that then, Ann. It is such a huge haystack!!!! I have definitely pinned down Thomas Richmond with mother Thomasin/Thomasina Hool and father James (he of the good genes! Interestingly his grandaughter lived to be 82 and her daughter and granddaughter lived to be 90 and 93 respectively so maybe there's something in it). I'm lucky finding some unusual names in among them all which makes life a bit easier but there are SOOOOOOOOO many of them, it's frustrating having no one living to ask. Thanks for getting back to me though and good luck with your continued search. If you need me to go and look at any gravestones here in the Highlands just let me know. I've discovered my great grandfather's family lived a 10 minute drive from here and have actually gone to the house where he grew up. It's really quite exciting standing on the spot and imagining what it was like in the mid 1800s.
All the best

Re: Help!!!
It has been a while since I was on this particular thread, but now I am here to apologise to all the lovely people who tried to help me. I am here to tell you that you were right and I was wrong!
My great, great grandfather, James Richmond, was the son of James Richmond and Thomasin Hool.
Just this week I came into possession of the marriage certificate of James and his first wife, Elizabeth Harrison, and plainly shown there was his father's name. James - not William as I was so convinced of before. I have been searching census returns and marriages and all manner of details, and I am still doing so, but I just had to come on here and confess !
Bowing my head in shame

Hi Anne
No need to apologise We have all been convinced that the line we were following was the correct one until up pops some information that blows the entire branch away. My wife was convinced that one ancestor was THE John Lapraik that Robert Burns wrote about and it took several years to investigate every related family line only to discover that her John Lapraik was a cousin born in the same place. It was such a let down but at least we had lots of information to pass on to the genuine descendants. =D> =D> =D>

Re: Help!!!
I think we have all at one time went down the wrong path with a lang deid yins, myself included, although with a name like Alexander Stewart it wasn't hard to "follow the wrong one The good thing is that TS is a great forum, and will help sort things out if we can, with no recriminations or "I knew better" responses, just keep plodding on.
