Frederick Asken

I'm helping a friend and I eventually solved the mystery of his g g grandfather whose name was Thomas Erskine. I eventually found his birth as Thomas Askin born 1890 at Dumfries.

His father was Frederick Asken and I have found Fred's marriage and census records from 1871 till is death 1n 1913. His parents are given as George Asken and Ann Dewar. Ann Esken died in 1872 at Dumfries married to George Esken.

I cannot find George's death or any sign of them on a census record. The family were RC so I didn't expect to find a record of George and Ann's marriage.

At what point did the surname become Erskine?
in the censuses you have found where were they born?

SP does have Ann's death in 1872 [Esken], marriage of Fred to Bridget Hannoway in 1863 and a baby born Fred in 1869.[Asken]

but other than that I'm coming up with blanks for census or anything else.

The 1881 census has Margaret [6], Edward[4] & Andrew [1], but no Thomas ASKIN.

I'm not sure if we are following the correct family however, as Annette says the parents' names were George & Ann - not Frederick and Bridget.
SO...
I'm going back to the drawing board!

You are both looking at the correct family. Thomas Asken (and variations) born 1872 died in 1876 by the looks of it. I can see it indexed but haven't looked at the entry.

My Thomas was born in 1890 to the same couple - Frederick Asken and Bridget Hannaway.

Here they are in 1891 at Thistle St, Glasgow as transcribed at Ancestry -

Frederick says on one census record and a poorhouse application that he was born around 1844 at Campsie. In later census records he says Dumfries but there is no sign of him before his marriage to Bridget and no sign of his parents George and Ann.

I found Bridget in 1861 at Nith Place Rankines Close, St Marys Dumfries:

So she was born in Ireland , but judging from her brother's birthplace, she probably only remembers living in Dumfriesshire.
her parents and 3 brother are in High St Dumfries in 1871 as HANNARY.
A Michael HANNAVY died 1881[57] in Dumfries mms Folley,
I think brother Andrew is living with James HANNAVY & Family in Tradeston in 1881 [a Mary HANVEY died Bridgeton 1880?].

Of Frederick I've had much less success:
a death in 1914 ASKON mms DEWAR Aged70 at Govan
there is a Frederick ASKIN in 1911 aged 67 in Govan
but pre his marriage in 1863 - no sign.

I did find a death of Ann ESKEN or DEWAR in Dumfries 1872 aged 82 mms MCALLISTER,
so I'm off down that rabbit hole of surname variations next!

I have Frederick and Bridget's marriage entry in 1862. But no sign of him in 1861 or before. I also have his mother Ann's death entry in 1872 but no sign of her in 1871 or before. So frustrating.

I think I'm just going to stop at Frederick who I have lots of info on.
