As far as I remember Pencee, once the viewer is installed, you need to go through a process of popping disc 1 in for each area (Scotland is only 2 discs) so that the software recognises them as the correct data discs on each subsequent search - seems a bit clunky, but they were made years ago!
But maybe you have completed these steps already, in which case I can't help!

Best wishes
Lesley

Thanks Lesley. I've tried different disc but get the same error message each time. I did start with the Scottish disc before anything else, then read I needed a particular disc first, still no joy.

I followed the instructions to use the 1881 census discs, and it worked fine.
For a short time that is, then I started getting the message to load any disc in, but when I did that, I then got an error message.
Now wondering if I should delete everything and start again?

I've managed to get the viewer to work by following instructions to use compatibility mode. Only tried a couple of discs so far which work but I'm struggling with going from a record back to the search page. I haven't had much time to look though so I'll see how I go.

Have jigged the Viewer File and have the LDS CDS working with Win 8.0 and 8.1 with no problems

I always had the CD working on my past Win OS from Win 95 to Win7.

Follow the note below.

LDS CD Disk Set Operation with Windows 8.1 OS

To date a fix for installing the LDS CD sets that where designed in the early 90s has not been put on-line but I have a fix that overcomes this fault.

Family History Resource File Viewer 4.0

I have it running with no problems -- along with the data files mounted on my hard-drive. Saves a lot of inserting and removing of CDS.

Follow these steps:

Install the Viewer 4.0, it will eventually come up with an error message.

Now do the following

Just switch over to:
C:\Program Files (x86)
RF Viewer/Support Files

Top of file

AutoReg.exe

Right click file
Select Properties
Compatibiltiy
Compatibility mode:
Check Run this program in compatibility mode for:
Window 98/Window Me

Now "Manually"click on AutoReg.exe

and continue with the install.
Do not miss the step Upgrade to Viewer 4.1 which comes from Disk #1 in any set of data disks.

To install the CDs on your harddrive follow the steps in this Old Document

Have a great day

A warm welcome to [talkingscot]

I'm sure your directions will be very welcome and appreciated by those who were asking for solutions.
