Howland in Boughton Aluph Kent .....

Post by Tracey » Mon Jul 18, 2005 9:02 am

Hi there

I am looking for information on my Gt Grandfather George Howland

I think his parents were Henry Howland 1849 Warehorne Kent and Emily Tabrett 1845 Boughton Aluph Kent married 1869 in Kent.....needs confirming.

This is from the 1881 British Census..................
Children
1. George b 1868 Boughton Aluph
2. William 1869
3. Ellen 1873
4. Henry 1875
5. John 1877
6. Charley 1879
7. Ann 1881

Im hoping someone can confirm these as being George and his family. I also have the census from 1861 - 1901 for some of these.

George married Elizabeth Laver from Fobbing Essex and they lived in Tilbury.

The George and William from 1881 seem to be living with grandmother, Charlotte Spain age 70 born in Elham, Kent in 1871.

Also at the house, Boughton Aluph Kent, in this order:

Joseph Newman lodger 45
Clara Howland granddaughter 8
Henry Howland so-in-law 22 (groom gardener born Warehorne, Kent)
Emily Howland daughter 25
George Howland Grandson 2
William Howland Grandson 8 mths

In 1861 Charlotte 60 was with Husband John Spain 66 a labourer in Boughton Aluph. No children in house and no sign of an Emily in the area.

There is a Boughton Aluph Kent 1837 birth for an Amy Spain to John and Charlotte.

This Amy seems to have been staying in Ashford in 1861 along with an elder sister Harriet 27 (Emily Tabret and sister Mary were also in Ashford).

In 1861 Henry Howland (born Warehorne, Kent) in recorded as 10 years old, younger brother, Thomas, was 9.

Parents were:

William 37 a "Waggoner" from Warehorne, Kent
Ann age 35 born Arlestone, Kent
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Hi Andy

I have all that thanks but one thing i still havent worked out is the "Spain" name as Emily would have been born c 1845-6.

so as you put...............................
In 1861 Charlotte 60 was with Husband John Spain 66 a labourer in Boughton Aluph. No children in house and no sign of an Emily in the area.
......which i thought could be a second marriage
then.......................................
There is a Boughton Aluph Kent 1837 birth for an Amy Spain to John and Charlotte..........................which would mean Emily (Tabrett) was born after the marriage to John. Unless Emily,s age isnt correct on the census or Emily had been married before but i havnt found a Spain and Tabrett marriage (yet !).

Which is why im confused about the Spain name !! or am i missing something ? !

Help !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Since John and Charlotte are in the 1861 census together and Amy was born in 1837 it seems very unlikely that Charlotte remarried (certailly not before 1846 ish when Emily would have been born).

I'll have another look when I've got time.

Esther and Clara don't fit in with Henry and Emily's brood.

There is an Esther Spain of the right age in 1881 staying with parents George 40 a Train Driver and mother Esther.

It may be the case that when Henry was staying with Charlotte Spain because Charlotte WAS Thomas's mother-in-law he "Adopted" her rather than explaining son-in-law's brother! (just a thought)
