Early LMA records

Post by trish1 » Thu Oct 14, 2010 7:10 am

Ancestry have provided an index for the early LMA records 1538-1812 - I had tried manually searching with little success so despite the transcription errors no doubt included, this will be much better

LMA are the "London Metropolitan Archives". See
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/uklma?o_xid=43258&o_lid=43258
...partnership with London Metropolitan Archives lets us provide you with a wealth of key records for tracing your capital ancestors. Most crucial of these are the London parish registers – records of births, marriages and deaths that allow you to move through the generations all the way back to the 1500s.
- looks to be a useful source for those with London ancestors

Hi Lesley

If you have London ancestors the marriage records are especially useful as they are the original marriage records containing all the information as per a civil certificates (for marriages post July 1837). The signatures are as signed by the couple and witnesses, rather than transcriptions of same that are on certificates purchased from GRO.

The baptisms are useful for finding family groups, although rarely do English baptisms contain the mother's maiden name. Some parishes provide birth dates, some have baptism dates only. Burials, as in most parish records contain little information - age is often given, and sometimes an address.
