Grosse Île Quarantine station: memorial list

Post by LesleyB » Sun Aug 24, 2008 10:08 am

Hi all
For those of you who had Irish ancestors who you know left Ireland and were perhaps likely to be heading for Canada, and then just seem to vanish, this site may be worth checking: Grosse Île Quarantine station. A very sad end to what must have been a desperate and difficult journey.

A list of names can be found here:

If some of your ancestors passed away at the quarantine station at Grosse-Île, their names might appear on the memorial erected by Parks Canada in 1998. This monument was placed close to the western cemetery, and bears the names of people who died either on Grosse-Île or on the boats: immigrants, employees and sailors. Of the 7553 people buried here, 1545 are still unknown. ....only the names of the deceased are on this list.
Best wishes
Lesley

Hello Lesley,

I’ve just been having another read of what’s there. It’s a very interesting site and a tragic situation. The poor Irish were either in the frying pan or in the fire and no wonder so many of them left.

My lot mainly left around 1841 from Strabane and Clonakilty so missed the famine and my G Grandmother, my last Irish connection, left Tullamore in 1853. Fortunately they were all assisted passages to Australia so I know their parent’s names and home towns etc.

All the best,
Alan
