How Rare - McGregg .....
How rare is the name McGregg in Ireland? My grandmother, her three sisters and a brother were all born in Newry, Ireland at the end of the 1800's. I have grandmother's birth certificate. All appear in Ardrossan Scotland after 1910 where they all marry. Their father died in Newry in 1916. The name has now gone as the son had no issue.

Hi Hughie
A website that I've found handy in narrowing up the locations of surnames in Ireland is found here....
http://scripts.ireland.com/ancestor/index.cfm
There is a basic search that is free!
A look for McGregg appears that it was quite uncommon....Gregg being more popular.
Hope this helps!
Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean,
Thanks for that. I've jumped in and got to the first level. Will have a closer look and plod on.
BTW I don't know if you were aware, but the name Niblock gets a couple of mentions on my site. You can do a search from the opening page at www.threetowners.com - it's at Kilwinning, one is on the WW1 Honour Roll and the other was blown up at Nobel's nearby dynamite factory - it's a newspaper transcription.

Hi again Hughie
Thanks for pointing out the Niblock surname. That is one of my toughies!! An orphaned? 2xGrGrandmother that supposedly was born in Glasgow but the earliest census says Ireland and no known siblings. It is interesting to note where the name pops up though. Nice website you've got there!
Best wishes
