Hi
In the 1911 census he was 45 and a commercial traveller. His wife was Mary. Thety had 3 children John Stevenson Reid, Margaret Cathbert Reid and Wm Wylie Reid.
Can anyone give me the date of death for William Wylie Reid and is there any definite confirmation that he came from Rutherglen in Scotland?
William Wylie Reid Born 13 07 1865 Rutherglen Scotland

Hi jjlmary312
Have you checked where he siad he was born in the 1901, 1891 and 1881 census? It is always worth working backwards to follow someone, especially with a name like William Reid - I expect there are quite a few of them about, so the more info you can collect from the census years, the better.
Working from the ages of the known children, you should be able to estimate roughly when the couple married - and a successful search for the marriage would give you his parent names and also the age he said he was at that time then you may have a better idea of where and when to look for the birth, with parent names to cross check with so that you will know when you find the correct birth.
Wait a minute - I've just noticed that you have the date of birth - have you the full birth entry too? If not, where did the date of birth come from?
If you have then to ensure he is the same one, you would really need to follow him in the census years from point A - so 1871 with his parents to point B where you have found him in 1911 and ensure he is the same person with the marriage being another "check in " point along the way!
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Caz
To find out a rough date for the marriage you will have to trace the couple back in the census - easier if you know of the dates of birth of their children. Reid is not going to be the easiest surname to work with due there being quite a lot of them around, so the more you can research with regard to census, dats of birth of children & etc to narrow it down a bit, the better. Once you find the marriage, you will have Mary's surname.
What does it say on his birth entry? (you have given the date of birth above, so I am assuming you have seen this written somewhere?)
Best wishes

Hi Caz
The death date for the father William Wylie Reid is found online in the will calendars of PRONI. The abstract indexed online states :
Reid William Wylie of The Rowans Cranmore Avenue Belfast retired commercial traveller died 1 September 1938 Probate Belfast 28 September to Mary Reid the widow. Effects £675 16s. D.B.N. P.R. 26.11.47
His son William Wylie Reid has death info found in the Probate indexes of England/Wales found online on Ancestry. That data states William Wylie Reid of 66 Shandon Park Belfast died 20 April 1960 at the Royal Victoria Hosp Belfast. The Probate is in Belfast to Margaret Cuthbert Reid spinster. The date of Probate is 26 Apr 1961.
From the Irish census householder schedule you can see that William and Mary state they have been married 17 years and both state born Scotland as well as their first 2 children. Young William Wylie is born in Ireland. It is quick work to find the birth of daughter Margaret Cuthbert Reid in 1899 Scotland. On her certificate you can learn the marriage date of her parents as well as her mothers maiden name. This is available on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk for a few credits.
Best wishes

After Jean so kindly provided a date I found a short obit in the ‘Irish Independent’ September 03, 1938.
“Mr William W. Reid, who has died at his home, The Rowans, Cranmore Ave., Belfast, was a native of Glasgow, and came to Ireland as representative of a Scottish firm of chemists and druggists, for whom he travelled Ireland.”
He seems to have been doing pretty well, this is Cranmore Avenue.

In August, 1939, Margaret Cuthbert Reid was working as a Typist for the War Office but it doesn’t say where. http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/34657/pages/5769
All the best,
Alan
