irish ancestors .....

Post by karenc » Fri Jan 27, 2006 8:27 pm

Hi there just wondered if anyone has come across the name Marlin in their family tree. my great-grandmothers maiden name was marlin and before coming to scotland i think she possibly came from londonderry (not sure about that thought!)

I think her parents were james marlin and sarah mclean

james' parents were andrew marlin and margaret deerie

i dont have a lot of info on this family and if anyone can help me i would be very grateful!

Hi Karen

If the following is your family on the 1881 census, then perhaps one of the Scottish born childrens birth certs would tell you where the parents were married, hopefully in detail, and not just 'Ireland'.

Hi Karen,

If the link to Londonderry is Grace Marlin of c1868 who appears on the IGI, I am not so sure. The parents fit well as James Marlin and Sarah Mc Clean, but the siblings don't go well with the family that Ian has found in the 1881 census, unless Sophia could be Josepha and Alexander could be Andy (Sandy?). I would be hoping to find some more evidence elsewhere.

Hi Karen

It sure looks like your family to me in 1881. If you were named Josepha wouldn't you go by Sophia too  ????

Wee Elizabeth's BC is under Eliza right where you'd expect it to be. Her mom recollects being married "about 1865 November, Maghera, County Derry, Ireland".

Best wishes
Jean
