Trying to find any information on the MUIR family in County Antrim prior to 1860.
Particularly looking for info on ALEXANDER MUIR, his wife ANN and their son JOHN (born c.1827).
Thanks,
Ian

There's a website for free searches of headstone inscriptions in N.Ireland:
www.historyfromheadstones.com
I didn't find an Alexander, but this one interested me :
Sacred to the memory of Thomas Muir Matthew, son of Thomas Matthew & Catherine Muir, Kincardine, Perthshire, Scotland He was born at Edinburgh 1814, died in Belfast, [May 1833] [His father was from Muir Park near Glasgow].
He was a distance from home, but what a lot of info. on a gravestone

A bit like teaching granny how to suck eggs here, but Muir is a very uncommon name in Antrim (Ireland for that matter). I have seen Irish Moores becoming the more common Muir in Scotland.
I found loads of these by accident a few years ago around Renfrewshie, Houston & Killellan, Eastwood, Barrhead and Neilston.
Just a thought

Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).
Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Hullo Ian
I was interested in your query, linked with Andy's comment, because I have a number of Renfrewshire Muirs in my tree.
The Neilston Village Census for 1841 has
Alexander MUIR 41 Merchant
Ann MUIR 31
John 15
Alex 11
Waugh 8
Janet 4 and James 1
Husband, wife and the 2 elder boys were born in Ireland, the others in Rfw
Could this be your family?
Best Wishes
Catriona

Sorry IanM I was mixing you up with IanS one of our Irish experts. However, the comments (except teaching granny to suck eggs) remain true.

Hullo again, IanM
The above Muir family can be probably found in the 1851 Census at
www.barrhead-scotland.com/culture/history/1851search
Some of the older children are missing, but John is there with some "new" brothers and sisters.
Have a good day
