Is Ancestry worth it ?

Post by Susie Q » Thu Apr 17, 2008 8:44 pm

Thank you all for your opinions. I've found it helpful reading the replies to my post. I think, on the whole, that I might try the free trial, and if that proves worthwhile, go for a month at a time.
Thanks again, you can always count on TS for a quick response. =D>

Cheers

I did a year with the World Membership when I got a US$100 discount on it. I reluctantly just cancelled it as it was up for renewal and I can't justify that much money.

I was a Ancestry.com 'hater', but I must say, it was far more useful than I ever expected. I used US and UK censuses extensively so certainly got my money's worth out of it. I also found things that I might not have found if I hadn't had the access to such a powerful general search engine like Ancestry has. Eg. find all the people born in an English town who are living in a particular Welsh county, list all the people on the 1841 census living in x parish. I could find relatives I didn't know about by doing searches like that. Helps if the names aren't too common. There are no limits to what you can download. Used in conjunction with SP, it's invaluable for eliminating people. I could often easily eliminate people by checking all their census records. Having access to all those census records together on one search engine is very useful.

It is annoying though to have to spend extra time searching because their transcriptions are so bad. I've resorted to searching by just first names sometimes due to being unable to find a surname due to bad transcriptions.

Have a research plan, and sign up for a set time and then be tough and cancel it.

I did get an annual subscription last year and at one point was having a great deal of trouble actually getting on. I wrote to TS and blamed you all for taking up the offers of free weeks/months and using up all the access! I later found out that my hub was playing up and I was having an intermittent loss of access to the internet. So it wasn't you lot at all!!!
Got a new hub and since then no trouble at all and have already got my money's worth with several months to go yet. Will probably renew when it runs out.
Cheers all

free ancestry

I can use Ancestry for free in libraries in Suffolk and Cambridgeshire and don't usually have trouble getting access to a computer for anything from half an hour upwards. Printing out pages usually costs 10p. Disadvantage is that for Scotland you can only access the Census material.
Hope this helps.
