Hi Wilma
Any snippet is enough to set me off.....
I know...its awful isn't it? Even snippets belonging to other families are tempting.

I feel sure one of these days it will be suddenly recognised as some sort of "compulsive, addictive" disorder and we'll all have to go "underground" ... :D

....and anyone whose mind immediately switched to cemeteries at this point (like me!) has a real problem!

Best wishes
Lesley

Yes highly recommend reading the book & I must say when I read this a few years age it did get me thinking about other possibilities for missing relies.
I could cry when I think of my little brother taping over a cassette I had made of my wee Granny talking about the old days & family. Now I know that she made a tape for the local Primary school which I know wont contain family details but....& have I done anything about it?
Also I know of a 2nd Cousin who has researched the Family & have I contacted him ? No but I will when I go home at Christmas & just hope he still has info/will share & hasnt gone gaga.
I have also started writing Family Story I have kept a Journal since I was 14. Not kept it updated recently but I am sure I could share some thoughts memories with the younger generation. Thanks for prodding me out of my inertia.

Wilma - your post reminded me of this:

A couple of years back I made contact with someone on Genes Reunited through searching for an unusual name - the contact was not directly related, but our families were connected by a marriage. We swapped scans of old photos and this person very kindly sent me photos of the cousin of my grandmother's - the one with the unusual name, and when I downloaded them my jaw dropped. The photo she sent of this young lady in her teens was the spitting image of my teenage daughter and up until that point I hadn't thought my daughter looked anything like my side of the family at all! We were all astounded by this. In some ways it was quite spooky, but in a good kind of way.

Then about 6 months later I finally located my grandmother's cousin's death, (she died in England at a mature age, so it took me a while!!!) only to discover that the unusual name she was known by was not her real name at all- her real name was a name which crops up in our family every couple of generations or so....the same name that I gave my daughter!

Best wishes
Lesley

My father was just old enough to serve in the RN at the end of WWI, which was why, I only realised later, that he was so proud of his RNVR Wavy Navy blazer.

When clearing out my mother's house when she went into a nursing home some 15 years ago, one cupboard contained a small suitcase full of family photos and papers, including my uncle Billy's WWII RAF Transport Command log book, map, badges, and the dreaded "I regret ......" letter from the palace.

It also contained a tattered photo which I vaguely recall seeing as a kid, -a group photo of approx 30 naval seamen.......... my intitial reaction when looking at it closely was "What the h*** is my brother doing in this photo?" :!:

It was the first time that I'd ever seen my father with a full head of hair, and my elder brother is the spitting image of him at that age...... \:D/

Books to read

Post by mac » Tue Dec 06, 2005 8:15 pm

I have mentioned this before. Book 'A Blast From The Past' written by a namesake of someone we all know, Andrew Paterson (our Andrew denied it was him!) was brought to my attention by a review in a local paper, which finished by saying that; 'Far from being of interest only to those of a mining background, A Blast From The Past could be described as three works in one; a family history focusing on the life of the author's grandfather, the harrowing story of a pit disaster and an important social history.
Book cost me only £10 and, having read it, I had to agree with review in that I literally couldn't put it down until I found out what fate befell each and every one of the grandfather's twelve children.
Author also revealed all of the 'avenues' his research took him down and opened my eyes to sources I hadn't previously considered.
Contact to purchase book at end of review given as, www.blantyrepast.com

If it was you Andrew own up, you should be proud of this superb book.
