After being rebilled I decided to keep the subscription on for another 3 months because I still need to use it. I still have a couple of months left but will make sure I cancel the subscription in advance this time.

For ancestry.com, which I've had to use for the US Federal censuses, I just take out 48h access when I need to look up something.

I quite often sign up for the 2 week trial and nothing happens to your card till that trial is up, hence the phone number to make sure its cancelled 8-[

I'm very wary of these "give us your credit card details" sites..
I think that they rely on you forgetting to cancel [-X

Is it easy to get through on the phone.... and do you have to phone America?

You can phone the U.S to cancel I was so frustrated once with .com i thought i would have to fly there to do it
To cancel you just send a simple mail addressed to cancel@ancestry ( i cant think of the exact at the moment). Like Rab though if i need to use .com for American look ups i use the pay as you go. With the English version you can just phone them and they are easy to get through to.

I dont suppose most of us read all the info on these sites - i certainly didnt when i joined .com and when they re billed me with their automatic billing i wasnt a happy bunny but it was my own fault It clearly says that is what they do when you give your details. That is why i DO make a note now and stick it on my wall and in my diary so the same thing doesnt happen again. What they should do is send you a reminder email just to let you know your subscrition is due for renewal but then again ..

Well I am in a quandary here as I have tracked down two descendants on Ancestry & subscribed too.Now if you go to your FHC you can have free access to Ancestry which is great for my Canadian/American connections -found my missing Great-Grandfather's brother had not only emigrated to USA but had remarried & at age 60 had a seven & four year old!With there ranked search which usually drives me crazy I was given this very unusual First/Middle name which I instantlly recognised whilst looking for plain old John.
So now will cancel my quartely sub & use it at the Family HIstory Centre for free! So for Scottish research found nothing but for finding living relllies & USA&Canadian connections good!

A stated above, at the present time there is very little Scottish information to be found on either Ancestry England or Ancestry US. However, if you have relations that appear in Scotland and then mysteriously disappear it would be very wise to start looking for their reappearance in England, as three separate families of mine did after 1881. Since locating these families in the 1891 and 1901 English census, I have used that information to locate the index reference numbers for the English birth, marriage and death records located on the www.1837online.com site. Once I had the index numbers I was able to order on line the BMDs of 62 family members, which has eventually led to live family members. It's not inexpensive but no hobby is. And if you want all your work to have value and to be taken seriously by future generations then you must document all your findings with as much primary source material as possible, which means you will end up owning or transcribing many, many birth, marriage and death certificates.

Once you find your missing relations in England or not, then you can throw your net a little further and try the US. Once you have done that you can try the new www.ancestry.ca site for Canada.

You don't have to take out a yearly subscription. Sign up for a free period or a 14-day trial period first. MAKE NOTE ON HOW TO UNSUBSCRIBE AND WRITE IT DOWN AND KEEP IT SAFE before, I repeat before, you sign up and give your credit card info. I kept my Ancestry US membership for 7 years before discontinuing my subscription. I still have my US census sub. Each year when my subscription was up for renewal, I would receive a phone call from Ancestry to see if I wanted to continue the membership and of course, would I like to up-grade. I have always found Ancestry to be a quality company and have never had a problem. Never! If you forget to cancel your subscription and find a renewal billing on your credit card bill call Ancestry's phone number that should be listed with the credit card's itemized billing information and ask them to cancel the subscription and credit your account. Naturally, don't wait to cancel just before your next billing. As for using your credit card on the net…don't worry about it. You are not responsible for charges you didn't make but it is a hassle to straighten out. But if you insist on worrying you can do what I did. Get a new credit card and tell the credit card company that you want a credit limit of say $1000.00 dollars. NO MORE than that. That's the card you use on the net. When the card company extends you a higher credit limit, and they will, tell them no.
That's my advice…for what it's worth.

Thank you all once again - and many thanks for your posting Bob. You have given me a lot to think about how to find one family that has mysteriously disappeared! I have their names on their daughter's marriage certificate, when they were living in Perth - but after that they seem to have disappeared. The only other link I can find is that they may have come from Yorkshire.

My other thought was that maybe they emigrated, and when I checked the site called Ships Lists (which I found TS under 'Sources') - there were quite a number there with the same name and born in the same year in England - but guess what? It is Run by Ancestry. Ever decreasing circles comes to mind

I have the uk ancestry but presently my husband took the trial Canadian one will let you know when we cancel next week how it goes. I have found the UK one worth the money only wish I could get the Scotland People one for a fee rather than by credits.

Silly me, I have let the deadline for my 14 day fre trial with Ancestry expire. I didn't see anywhere on the site where it said they wouldn't contact you before debiting the money. As a bank employee I'm not sure this is strictly regular.
Wish I'd read this thread earlier!
Anyone tell me how much it will have cost me for Ancesry Uk as I can't remember.
