Hi Bertha,

Unfortunately Ancestry doesn't notify you when your free trial is up. That's probably what they are betting on.

You could try contacting them and let them know you are not satisfied. I signed up about a year ago, and found very little relating to Scottish genealogy. I contacted them and told them how disappointed I was, and they cheerfully refunded my money.

Good luck.

Hi Ina
Thanks I'll do that tomorrow night. I did try the e-mail contact but it took me to a question thingy and gave me a number to phone in the uk but it closed at 7. Hopefully they will refund or there goes my Christmas money!

Silly me, I have let the deadline for my 14 day fre trial with Ancestry expire. I didn't see anywhere on the site where it said they wouldn't contact you before debiting the money. As a bank employee I'm not sure this is strictly regular.
Wish I'd read this thread earlier!
Anyone tell me how much it will have cost me for Ancesry Uk as I can't remember.

Somewhere on the various screen and buttons that led you to sign up to the 14 day free trial I'm sure that there was a page with, or referring you to, the Terms & Conditions, and you almost certainly clicked on a button to confirm that you had read, understood and agreed with said T&C :!:

That, I'm sure, will be the Ancestry response. Whether or not this could be regarded as an unreasonable condition of contract under the relevant UK legislation is open to debate, - if, that is, the legislation covers contracts entered into via the www, - anyone out there know ?

Hi All,

Just to make it clear.......when I signed up for Ancestry, and then received a full refund, it was not via the 14 day free trial. I actually signed up for a one year membership.

A couple of years ago, I started a subscription, paying monthly, like others under the impression that I could terminate with a month´s notice. After finding next to nothing that was relevant, I gave in notice and received a letter telling me that I was bound for a whole year but they would let me stop paying as a goodwill measure. Last week I received a letter from lawyers in the USA letting me know that I was involved in a "class" action as a former subscriber to Ancestry.com. The gist of the matter is that Ancestry were taken to court by a pair of subscribers who did not consider the subscription fair ie. "arising from the Defendants failure to advise Class Members that the difference in price between annual subscriptions paid on a monthly basis and those paid with a one-time payment constituted the cost of credit extended by the Defendants on their monthly payment plans." (Thought I´d better quote rather than explain, for, I hope, obvious reasons!)

They have settled it seems, subject to court confirmation 13.February in Utah, and everyone who had a subscription sometime before 3.November 2005 will receive a free month, and from now on one can terminate an annual subscription as if it were a monthly one.

Reckoned to be worth about $3,000,000...... :)

Makes things a bit easier for most people I reckon, so cheer up Bertha.... :D

Best wishes,

Thrall

Hi
Thanks David, Ina & Thrall.
I read over the terms and conditions again and it does say there is a 7 day cooling of period but if you signed up for the 14 day Free Trial that takes the place of the 7 days. So I will just have to put it down to experience and not let the kids distract me when I'm on the computer.
maybe I won't find my lot but I can surely help others.

Hi All
Just to let you know I phoned Anestry UK (a free phone number) and spoke to a very nice young man who cancelled my subscription there and then.
Guess that means I'll have the money to spend on SP now!
So anyone else with the same dilema just go ahead and ask, they are very understanding

To throw in my tuppence worth - I've had three experiences with Ancestry. The first was a free trial which came with Family Tree Maker programme. I was in a state of alarm when I heard about the "cancel within the time or commit", so emailed to ask them to cancel at the end of trial period (I was only a fortnight into it). Unfortunately they cancelled straight away, so I lost most of the trial  I hadn't seen much of interest during the 2 weeks, so I let it go.

Twas then I found I had people who'd emigrated :x Could have kicked myself, but took out a one month trial. Set the timer to remind me, emailed and asked for confirmation of cancellation which arrived about an hour later. Everything tickety boo.

Some time later, my husband found he needed a free trial  Went through the required cancellation process, but no confirmation arrived. In all I sent 8 emails, then arrived a bill for about £50 (or maybe it was $s). I toughed this one out, pointed out the cancellation emails - went on for about a fortnight before they agreed to refund as a "goodwill gesture". I was mad at them, as I'd followed the instructions exactly yet they came at me with the "terms and conditions" which I "may have misunderstood". Still get mad thinking about it, but got my money back in the end. Could do with another go at it, but I'm afraid it's in my nature to hold a grudge

Thrall's post is a crumb of comfort

To tidy things up, I can disclose that I have just received an email from the lawers in US:

The access period will begin midnight April 30 and run until midnight May 31, 2006. It is only available for that time period and cannot be delayed or activated at another time.
If you currently have any active Ancestry.com subscription or subscriptions, it/they will be extended for 31 days so that you enjoy the value of this class benefit, that is, the next renewal date will be moved out 31 days.

If you still have an active Ancestry.com subscription for which you made an annual commitment but are billed monthly, that subscription has converted into a true monthly subscription.

First lottery I´ve ever won in!

Good hunting, (aren´t you all jealous...... [-X )
