Hello
I am researching for my mother's partner who has very little knowledge of his family in particular on his mother's paternal side GRANT, predominately from METHLICK. I had a bit of luck finding the GRANT family on this site, the 1841 census (in the village of METHLICK). I need to establish the marriage after 1855 between John Grant and Isabella, again in METHLICK - I would appreciate some guidance please as to how I can find the relevant records. I tried looking at the IGI batch but the marriage records are not available after 1855. John was born in 1835 and Isabella was born in 1836.
Thank you for your assistance.
Kind regards

Hi Christopher
Welcome to Talking Scot
All births, marriages and deaths for Scotland from 1855 onwards can be found at the Scotlands People site. It is a pay-per-view site but is reasonably good value and is the only source online of original records of BM&D - if you are able to find the marriage, on downloading it will be able to see a digitial copy of the original entry which will contain a good deal of information.
A quick look however, is not turning up anything obvious. Could do with a surname for Isabella - do you know it?
Normally one works backwards in time ensuring that you have documentation at each stage. Why do you think this couple married in Scotland? Is it possible they may have married elsewhere? They may just be hiding behind a mistranscription, but it will help us to help you if you can fill us in on a little background about the couple. Can you give us more info on what you found in the 1841 - names ages occupations etc?
What other documentation do you have e.g. births of any known children in Scotland would most likely give the place and date of marriage on the birth entry....
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Christopher,
As statutory registration started in Scotland in 1855, the IGI batch numbers for Scottish records all change at 1854/1855. The IGI includes births up to 1874 and marriages up to 1875. Digital images of these records (and later years) can be viewed online at http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk on a pay-per-view basis.
IGI batch C112211: Methlick births 1855-1874
IGI Batch M112211: Methlick marriages 1855-1875
All the best,
AndrewP
(PS - Lesley must have been typing faster than I was )

Is it the household of William Grant, Spirit Dealer aged 30 that you were looking at in the 1841?

A short time later...,
As Lesley says, there is no obvious marriage of John Grant and Isabella in Methlick post-1855. However, on searching the online IGI in Aberdeenshire for 1865 ± 10 years, there are only 7 results. If tackling it geographically, one of these is in the next-door registration district of Tarves, and should be a good starting point. The others are more distant across the county.
All the best,
AndrewP

Hi Andrew and Lesley
Many thanks indeed for your very prompt response and your excellent guidance. I accept your point without reservation that I should not assume too much and I should study the appropriate formal documents to be absolutely certain. Yes it is the household of William Grant - I am assuming that his son John, was my mother's partner's great grandfather (based on John's age and place of birth from the 1881 / 1901 censuses in Methlick).
Once again I am very grateful for your kind assistance.
Kind regards
Christopher

Hi Christopher,
The Kirkyard of Methlick booklet of MI's published by the Aberdeen and NE Scotland Family History Society has MI's for William Grant and wife Mary Clark, daughter Rachel Susan Grant and Son William Grant, M.D. as well as for John Grant and wife Isabella Morrison and their son Robert Lumsden Grant.
Are any of these yours? From the 1851 Census it looks like they could be.
Carol
Added later: There was a third son James Andrew Sandilands Grant, also an M.D., who lived in Cairo, Egypt with his family. Another gravestone has a memorial with quite a bit of information on this family.

Hi Carol
Thanks for looking up for me - much appreciated. I will have to ask my mother's partner to cough up some money as I am running out of credits! This site has been a very good experience for me.
Thank you.
Kind regards
Christopher

Hi again,
I talked my sister into paying half on the research costs! Helps a lot!
Here's the address for the ANESFHS where you can buy the Methlick MI booklet: http://anesfhs.org.uk/
Looks like you're researching an interesting family!
Good hunting,
Carol
