McNicol

Post by ktyreman » Sat Jan 08, 2011 9:55 pm

Im tracing my family history , and it looks like my ancestors came from Killin, then moved to Glasgow, then moved to the North East of England.I have a forename of John he appears on the 1841 Census. I would like to hear from anyone who knows anything about the McNicols from those areas.I think John was born around the 1800s.I Would be grateful for any imformatiom . Many Thanks.

Hello ktyreman and [TS_welcome]
Since there are many, many John McNicols in the records, it would help if you could give us some more information. What is the location of the 1841 census you are referring to? What are some of the other members of the household?

Please tell us all the information you already have, so we don't duplicate your efforts. We look forward to helping you.

All the best,
Sarah

Like Sarah has kindly pointed out....more is always more when it comes to genealogy! To be sure we're talking about the right family group here we need a bit more data from you. For example...here is a John McNicol in 1851 census in Glasgow who was born in Killin about 1800. Is he the one you're referring to?

Dear ktyreman

I have no record of Killen, But my traces so far go to the Cambuslang area of Glasgow.

John McNicol DOB? (cabinet Maker) married Mary Murray DOB 1803 in 1819 at St Davids, Ramshorn

They had 2 sons:
James DOB 1820 (Clothlapper) who married Elizabeth McLean (Cloth industry) DOB 1823, they Married in 1845.
John DOB 1825 (no other details known)

James and Elizabeth had:
James 1845 dies aged 5
Charles 1849
Elizabeth about 1855, she was a Cotton Threader who married John Carberry in 1875
Alexander Caddell 1855 who married Annie Kay in 1878
James Murray 1857 watchmaker married Margaret Sime in 1878
Mary 1860 married David Barrie
Janet Caddell 1863

James Murray and Margaret had:
Jemima Anderson 1880
James Murray 1881
John 1891 (my Grandfather who married Margaret Happel Prentice in 1915)
Alexander 1894
Jean Anderson 1895
Catherine Jackson 1896
Georgina Anderson 1909

My Grandfather moved to Sunderland Co Durham in the late 20's and at some stage Georgina also moved there. He was the optician in the Binns department store in Sunderland before he opened his own business. Later he moved to Keswick.

Regards
Chis
