fife papers 1830-40

Post by David Standley » Mon Sep 26, 2011 11:24 am

Hello. This is a post from a new member. I am trying to find information about Fife newspapers around 1830.

Archibald Wallace was my wife's 3x gg grandfather. Born in 1790 in Kilconquhar, Fife, son of John Wallace and Euphan Jervice, he became a writer in St Andrews. He married Ann Lauder in 1820 and had three children, Elizabeth Baird [1823],John [1825 and my wife's 2 x gg gradfather] and Euphemia Jervis [1827].

I have found reference to bankruptcy proceedings against him in Fife in 1830 and to the death of an Archibald Wallace, writer from St andrews,in Quebec in 1832.

I am trying to find more information about the bankruptcy and what subsequently happended to his family and wondered if there would be any contemporary newspaper reports?

Any suggestions would be welcome.

The Scotsman has an advertisement for the bankruptcy sale of goods and properties November 10th 1830

A slightly earlier edition from August lists Archibald Wallace, writer, merchant and commission agent as a bankrupt and calls for a meeting of creditors on 20th August.

There didn't appear to be much interest in the properties as they are again advertised in March 1831 at "much reduced prices" and again in June & August 1831 where again the price is reduced.

Hi David

If you have access to Ancestry, there is a Fife Newspaper index here which may be of use (but may not be!):

Also see

http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/ ... 3/page.pdf
for a mention of a "Notice to the creditors of Archibald Wallace"
and see also

Best wishes

Hello David,

A search of the 19C British Library newspapers, including Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen and Glasgow, only produces a brief mention of the matter in a York newspaper.

In the Edinburgh Gazette Archibald Wallace is described as Writer, Merchant and Commission-Agent. Andrew Bousie, writer in St Andrews, was trustee of the sequestrated estate from 1830-32 or thereabouts.

In “The Scottish Jurist”, published 1832, the same Andrew Bousie is Trustee for someone named as Wallace. I haven’t tried to digest it all but the Wallace in this story was also a Commission-Agent. It’s to do with a cargo of wood. If that's him maybe that’s what prompted the bankruptcy. http://books.google.com.au/books?id=gag ... 22&f=false

There’s something in the Scottish Law Reporter, 1914. I can only see snippets, depending on your location you may be able to see more. http://www.google.com.au/search?tbm=bks ... _pw.&cad=b

Hope there’s something useful there,
Alan

I wonder how many Writers named Wallace there were in St Andrews in the early 1830s. Here’s something about a Dinner to be given to Lord Grey at Edinburgh on 15 September, 1834. Among the list of those “for whom tickets were taken out for the dinner” No. 1778 is Mr Wallace, Writer, St. Andrews.

LATER: On 1841 FreeCen there don’t appear to be any Wallace Writers in St. Andrews.

Thanks all for your replies.

The reference to Scottish Jurist and a dispute over a cargo of wood is very useful. It looks as if Archibald Wallace 'did a runner' to Canada sometime between 1830-32.I have a reference to an Archibald wallace, writer from St Andrews, dying in Quebec in 1832.

His wife [widow?] and two daughters were living in South Street,St Andrews in the 1841 census. An earlier 1820's reference to AW gives him as having offices in South Street.

I also have a post on the emigration topic asking for help with passenger lists of this time but it looks as if they are very incomplete.
