Greetings.

This news copied from another web forum, will be sad indeed, for all those who were helped by Bridget and her team of volunteers.

Sad news indeed, Alan. Although I never used the site it seems a lot of people benefited from it, so hopefully Bridget's good work won't be undone.

Sad indeed. I've used it several times, obtaining some wonderful photographs of graves across the world which I'm never likely to visit myself. There were some wonderful, wonderful people involved who went way beyond reasonable expectations to help. ( On one occasion, all I asked for was a simple photograph of my great uncle's grave in Auckland. Some wonderful lady went there, took the photo, laid some flowers, and said some kind word to him on our behalf. Still brings me to tears to think of it.) I hope someone with knowledge of how to go about these things picks up the mantle and continues in her honour.

RIP Bridget.

Greetings Sarah.

The bush telegraph is working overtime with you. From what I see the site has only just gone public, with 76 registered helpers/volunteers in the last few weeks, and only a dozen or so postings to date.

No down under forum yet, but presumably someone with more contacts/experience than I, will offer to help with questions for our nick of the woods.

I wish them all the best, because I believe in what goes around - comes around.

Glad to see this. RAOGK was a fantastic site, full of fantastic people. I like what they've done with this site too (specially the forum!) and have put it in my favourites already.

My only concern is that the details of the volunteers are so public - I think that might put some people off volunteering. It'd put me off. Surely a personal messaging system like the one here, under a simple listing giving details of the country/area a voluneeer could help in, and what they'd do to help, would encourage more to join up. Just a thought if any of them happen to look in here.

Hope it takes off in the same way RAOGK did,

Regards
Ann

Greetings Ann

I noticed that too, but as each profile was different, I asumed the info provided for the profile, was optional.

Ten years ago it was different, but I soon learnt when my research took me into Russia, it was not a good idea to be publishing your personal details on the front page.

We have come a long way since those days, but as always it should be user - beware !

Aye, maybe so. Good job not everyone's as pessimistic or wary as me!

For a site that seems to be pushing the RAOGK replacement theme, and getting most of the publicity, I am amazed at how unlike RAOGK it is. The RAOGK site protected the contact details of the helpers. It had one function only and that was to help people access material that would require long distance travel for them to do so themselves. The design of the site was uncluttered and simple to use. http://web.archive.org/web/201012301107 ... isting.htm

The new GenerousGenealogists site looks to me like a dog’s breakfast of a genealogy forum that’s offering lookups. People who plant their names and addresses and phone numbers and email and pictures of their kids and more, and in full public view, there, are really just asking for trouble. The site offers no protection and no warning of the risks.

But is RAOGK really dead or is it just resting?

Here’s the RAOGK Facebook thing page, which maybe has the latest, but I can’t see it.

Here’s the RAOGK Wiki workaround site.

Maybe Gen Gathering is closer to the real thing?

Maybe all these sites will go into voluntary liquidation if ever the real RAOGK comes back to life. Who knows?
