John Mccallum, Partick,

Post by jaymacel » Thu Jul 26, 2012 8:03 am

Hi, My grandfather John McCallum went to South Africa in the 1920's. My mother thought he never returned. I found a record of him arriving in Southampton in 1929. The ships record showed :-

John McCallum, 41 Dumbarton Road, Brass Moulder. age 42

All this fits in with my grandfather. His wife was dead by this time but his mum & dad still lived in Dumbarton Road. His children went to live with there grandmother. Bridget Gilhooly in Hamilton

He may have left again or settled in the UK, perhaps married again.

I know this is a long shot, but you never know

regards
John

Hello John and welcome to Talking Scot. :D

Have you tried to find a death record in Scotland for John?

If you know his mother's maiden name you can try putting that in a search at http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk.

A look at the passenger list has his permanent residence as South Africa so maybe he was just here for a visit. I believe S.A. records are not impossible to access. Have a look in that section in the forum or hopefully somebody else will come along who can help.

Regards,
Annette

Hello John,

This is a record of a 1950 South Africa death on Ancestry24. I don’t know how often they deliver that amount of detail. You could try the search there and see if anything familiar crops up. http://ancestry24.com/search-item/?id=C2149454792

For 41 Dumbarton Road, Partick, here’s the 1927 directory page, which has a J. Murray living there. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.anc ... ess847.jpg

There’s also a mention of the address in The Scotsman, 25 December, 1945. An ex-soldier, John Colquhoun, was living there when he appealed against non reinstatement in former employment.

Would 41 have been a tenement building? Unless I’m lost it would have been about here. https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=5 ... 08,,0,0.69

I think the big brick building is the old pumping station at No. 35. Perhaps the description at the end of this advert means there were three flats at No. 41 which was part of a tenement building running from 37-45. http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=4T ... road&hl=en

There seems to have also been a 41 Dumbarton Road in Stirling, also London?
