LDS "Scottish Churches" CD

Post by DavidWW » Mon Nov 21, 2005 4:14 pm

Help :!:

Where am I going wrong?

Where is this referred to in the Family History Library Catalog at http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... t_fhlc.asp ?

I can find the fiche reference but not the CD.

In other words, when ordering this CD in to a local FHS, what's the reference to use?

Hi David

I'm surely not the one to speak from experience as I have yet to make the long trek to my FHL to actually view this prized and mysterious source of all knowledge  .....but......I was really under the impression that all centers had one in stock on hand at all times. You don't need to order it in in other words...you just need to show up. I could be making this up out of whole cloth (a phrase my mother likes to use....don't ask for th origin as I don't know  )

Someone will be along shortly and straighten us all out I'm sure.....

Best wishes
Jean

I don't have a problem locating it :?:

From the main http://www.familysearch.org site, I followed
- order/download products
- software & databases
- miscellaneous databases

... which shows
50081000 Family History Library Catalog on CD, April 2002 $5.00 [US]

It is a real shame that this is only availble by visiting an LDS centre as this is not always possible for alot of people. I've contacted the LDS about it so I'll post here if I get a reply.

I read in this article in the Family Tree magazine that the index was available online at the Scots Origin website. I tried there but from the search results I got it appears to be the same online index as at the LDS.

Essentially that's correct, and it's even better that that in that the SP index is updated regularly, but the CD isn't.

The advantage of the CD is that it's free, has a better search engine than on SP. Until comparatively recently on SP it wasn't possible to search on the basis of parents' names for an individual, and it's still not possible to search on SP for all children to named parents.

Put it this way, even when I'm in at NRH, I'll use this CD in preference to the DIGROS system.

I got a reply back from the LDS and disappointingly as suspected the CD won't become available for purchase. They were very prompt with their reply though which is always nice (If the Mitchell Library are looking in :) )

Thank you for your inquiry about the future availability of the Scottish Church records CD.

Unfortunately, we can only confirm that the records contained on the Scottish Records CD cannot be made available for public purchase.

This is due to contractual agreements with Scotland.

Only Family History Centers are allowed to own and use the Scottish Church Records on CD-ROM.

However, you can access various Scottish records on the Internet through the General Register Office for Scotland (www.gro-scotland.gov.uk).

We're sorry if this is a disappointing reply to your request, but you will always be most welcome to use the Scottish Records CD for free at your local Family History Centre.

Great!

But the whole point is how an FHC obtain their copy :!: (that's assuming that it's not part of the basic kit.)
