NAS index problems for VR codes- any thoughts?

Post by LesleyB » Mon Feb 27, 2006 9:10 pm

Hi all
I'm having a kinda circular evening - going round and round in circles. :? I'm clearly missing something, probably something pretty obvious..... I hope this makes sense.

I'm trying to locate the NAS code for valuation rolls for 1888-1892 for 37 Great Western Road, Glasgow. I believe the area it falls into is;
1875-1906 644/9 Kelvin (1-441 Great Western Road) as found by Andrew at NRH (ages ago)

So, when I input Glasgow in the text box and VR in the ref box on the NAS search page I can access a helpful page telling me the VR codes for dates 1855-1975 for City of Glasgow District - 131/3. If I then input VR131/3 into the ref no. box on the search page it gives me a valuation roll code for Kelvin (VR131/3/29) ...but only from 1975 it seems... arghhh!

Any suggestions gratefully received 'cos I need to order these up tomorrow at the latest or they will not be there for me to view on Thursday!

Thanks
Lesley

Hi Lesley
Why don't you give NAS a call?
They will help look up the references and will order them in for you too, or they will be able to put you on the right track.

BTW you only need to order 24hrs in advance :)

Hi Lesley,

You missed a vital clue in that list of "VR" documents. All from VR121 onwards are from 1975 to 1995 (the era of the regions and districts). You found Glasgow District, a portion of Strathclyde Region.

The series you need is VR102 - Glasgow Burgh. Unfortunately that is not straightforward as the list claims to be 100 pages long (2982 records at 30 per page). These are in age order then area order starting from 1855. The pages can be forwarded singly or in tens. Good luck to you working out which ones you need to consult. Input VR102 in the RefNo box and see how you get on.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hi Susie
I phoned NAS this afternoon to order up 2 other documents as well as the VRs and they were unable to help ( I was on the 'phone for quite some time :? ).... I think I had someone new on the phone 'cos they suggested I look it up when I got there - which is all very well, but as I pointed out, I then wouldn't be able to view the VRs as I'd have to order them in advance!

As far as I remember, they prefer 2 days notice.
I've lived dangerously a few times before, ordering a day before & usually with disappointing results - on one occaision the stuff wasn't available till the afternoon which wasn't really ideal, though better than not seeing it at all!

Best wishes
Lesley

See... I just knew it would be something simple which I was over looking!
Good luck to you working out which ones you need to consult.
And I thought looking the bloomin' things up at NAS was complicated enough. I always seem to get totally lost with their VR codes - they are worse than the wills & testments codes...just!

Best wishes
Lesley

What would I use valuation rolls for? What would they tell me? It's not something I have come across before. Are they useful, (as well as difficult to find at NAS!!!)
Cheers

They will tell you who owned the property at a certain address, the tenants, and possibly the sub-tenants!. ... and not always that difficult to find at NAS !!

Tanks for that David. I think I'll investigate. You never know what you might find!
