U.S.-Canadian Border Crossing Records on Ancestry

Post by DavidWW » Thu Mar 29, 2007 9:56 am

The following announcement was written by The Generations Network, owners of Ancestry.com:

PROVO, Utah, March 28 -- Ancestry.com, the world's largest online resource for family history, today announced the addition of the first and only online collection of more than 4 million names of individuals who crossed the U.S.-Canadian border between 1895 and 1956. These historical records are the latest addition to Ancestry.com's Immigration Records Collection, which also includes more than 100 million names from the largest online collection of U.S. passenger lists, spanning 1820 to 1960.

I thought that these were already available, but apparantly not!

These records can be critical for Scots, as many travelled to one of the St Lawrence Seaway ports from Scotland, and then onwards south over the border to the USA; immediately, or after a stopover of a few weeks or months.

In other words, they will not appear in the Ellis Island and other American ports entry records.

Hi David

Nope this is a bunch of new records. I think the border crossing before were limited to the Great Lakes area....this one now includes the following:

".....an index of aliens and citizens crossing into the U.S. from Canada via various ports of entry along the U.S.-Canadian border between 1895 and 1956. Specifically, this database covers the following ports and years:

Calais, Maine (ca. 1906-Dec. 24, 1952) (also includes a few arrivals from 1877 to 1905)

Van Buren, Maine (ca. 1906-Dec. 24, 1952)

Vanceboro, Maine (ca. 1906-Dec. 24, 1952) (also includes a few arrivals from 1888 to 1905 and a few arrivals at Halifax, Nova Scotia and St. John, New Brunswick)

Fort Fairfield, Maine (ca. 1909-Apr. 1953) (also includes a few arrivals at Easton, ME, Houlton, ME, Boston, MA, and Buffalo, NY and a few alien departures)

Eastport, Fort Kent, Lubec, and Madawaska, Maine (ca. 1906-Dec. 24, 1952) (also includes some departure records of U.S. citizens)

International Falls, Baudette, Duluth, Mineral Center, Pigeon River, Pine Creek, Roseau, and Warroad, Minnesota (Jan. 1907-Dec. 1952) (also includes some departure records of U.S. citizens)

Buffalo, Lewiston, Niagara Falls, and Rochester, New York (1902-1954)

Hogansburg, Malone, Morristown, Nyando, Ogdensburg, Rooseveltown, and Waddington, New York (Jul. 1929-Apr. 1956)

Newport, Vermont (ca. 1906-Jun. 30, 1924)

St. Albans, Vermont (1895-1954)

Babb, Montana (Jun. 1928-Oct. 1956) "

Will have to find someone to search for now :D !!

Last week I decided to give Ancestry.com a 2-week trial period but, I really must be thick because I'm not getting anywhere and think I'd better cancel...it's very frustrating. I'm probably just too comfortable with SP, but while I have it, can someone please tell me how to find this new database of aliens who crossed from Canada on Ancestry...I can't see it anywhere

I was hoping to find my Daniel Scullion and family who may have gone to Montana via Canada sometime after 1885 or thereabouts. I did find some records in Lewis & Clark for whom I believe might be Daniel's son, the Rev. Charles A. Scullion but can't find all of the family together anywhere.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Regards,
Anne H

At top right of Ancestry.com's homepage there is a heading "What's new on Ancestry.com?". In that box click on "What else is new?". Scroll right down to the bottom of that page to the Recent Additions and it is the 3rd new item from the top of the moving list.

If that doesn't work, you can try this link that just came in an email...

They do say you need "U.S. Deluxe" membership-- is that what your trial sub is?

Sarah

Hi Rae,

Many thanks. I followed your directions and did find mention of it at the very bottom in the section entitled "Coming Soon".

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for pointing that out. I didn't get the deluxe version. Normally, I just get the "pay as you go" so maybe I'll just stick to that since I don't really know what I'm doing anyway, and I'm not certain many of my ancestors ever left Scotland.

Hi Anne,
It is right above 'Coming soon'. The 'Recent Additions' box has a moving list. This may appear blank as the list comes to an end and it is a second or so before the beginning of the list appears again. It has the records from 1895 to 1956.
Hope you have luck in finding it and your ancestors.

Hi Anne,
Was Daniel born in Ireland? No sign of him in the border crossings (they only start at 1895), but just wondering if he is the one in San Francisco in 1900. The family looks like this:
Daniel Scullin, 32, head, born in Ireland, shoemaker, came to U.S. in 1875
Margaret __, 28, wife, born California
Agnes __, 4, daughter, born California
John __, 3, son, born California
Charles __, 1, son, born California
Leo __, 2/12, son, born California

On second thought, they look a bit young for your lot. I just noticed because there was a Charles as well. There are others, but I don't know how to judge. If you want to post your family, we'll give it a try.
All the best,
Sarah
