Post by StewL » Wed Apr 11, 2007 1:01 pm

Hello All

For all those who may be interested, the Australian WWI Service records are now online at no cost.

The address is:

www.naa.gov.au

But be aware the site is being swamped and is very very busy at the present

Thanks for this, Stewie!

I just found my great grand uncle's service record. It's still a mystery *why* the man was in the Australian service, but they're not likely to answer that question for me.

Adding this post to say that in addition to finding out about his service, his record contained a copy of his marriage certificate, which was an unexpected bonus. Thanks again for the link!

I agree Awesome.
Scooter, I'm 100% certain you are related to someone who enlisted in Australia in WWI . It's just a question of how distantly related....

My great uncle emigrated to Australia and I was delighted to find his WW1 records online. There was about 20 odd pages, some of them duplicate, but they gave me quite alot of information which was fantastic.

These records have been available for some time. Unfortunately for we family researchers the PM has just given himself yet another publicity shot & it will probably be almost impossible to access the record search until after Anzac Day (April 25)

Our archives have full records for both WWI and WWII service. ALl of the WWI have been digitised and some of the WWII. Until recently you could request free digitisation of any record, but they have now added a fee (about 6 pounds in your money). You can, however get information from the index entries as in WWII they show date and place of birth and next of kin - also where living when enlisting.

The archives have many other records & immigration post about 1920 was the responsibility of the Federal government. If you had any "10 pound pom" immigrants in your family, post WWII, their immigration record may be found in the record search as well.

If the link does "nothing" it is because of the overload. If you try in the early evening Scottish time you may have more luck.

Hi Trish

I wasn't aware that the records have been available for some time. I dont have any rellies that served in the AIF (that I know  )

OH yes with an election at the end of the year publicity shots are a must  .

I did have a look for my brother-in-laws grandfather record last night, and found it. Most interesting but as has been said a few repeated lots of information, Oh well that is the military everything in triplicate
There was even a page on his service pension and what he received per fortnight. He was discharged in 1918 because of deafness caused in either Gallipoli or France, although damage was probably started in Gallipoli then finished off in France.

As you said the site will probably be chockers until ANZAC day, I was saying to my sister that the schools will probably be hitting it hit hard today.
I had to stay up a bit late to get access and even then it was very slow.

Hi Stewie

I guess it is nice that everyone knows about it, but they really need to upgrade their servers. Some of the files are incredibly sad (including the lad who lied about his age and died before he was 18  ). My grandfather's file included a letter from my grandmother asking was it true he was coming home (it wasn't at that stage). She died when I was 8, so it was heartwarming to see something she had written.

In some ways they show us that families never change - I looked up one for a friend & there was the letter from the soldier's sister asking when would he be home - "sorry to ask but we don't get on with his wife & she won't tell us when he is coming".

Some of the files are much larger than others and some certainly contain duplicates, but it surely is a valuable resource both for our country's history & our family history

regards
Trish
