George Mackay/Janet Manson

This couple went to Ontario Canada c1848 from Tongue, Sutherland. They are listed in the 1851 census at Zorro Oxford County, George's occupation listed as a farmer.

Also listed with them are children Alexander, b1841; Jane b 1843; Hugh c1845; George b c1847(all born in Tongue,Sutherland)and Wilson born c1851 in Ontario.

Have been unable to find any further information on George or Janet and I would like to find their date of death if possible.
Of the children I have found the following:

Alexander married Euphemia Mcphail born c1849 Cape Breton in 1869 in Grey Ontario. No further information on them.

Hugh married Margaret Macleod, born in Scotland c1848, daughter of Roderick Macleod and Christina/Christy McElwee in 1869. I have found one daughter for Hugh and Margaret, Sara Jane Wilson Mackay born 1888 in Turnbery Huron.

Wilson married Penny Ann Macleod, sister of Margaret, daughter of Roderick and Christina. They married in 1870 in Prescott Ontario. Penny Ann was born in Ontario c1854. Wilson died in 1920 in Listowell Ontario. I found him and his family in census of 1881 and 1911.
Wilson and Penny had the following children that I could find:
Wilson b 1873 Ontario
George b1880 Ontario
Elizabeth Victoria b1892 Ontario

Any information on the children etc would be great.
What information I have got is from Ancestry either through their free access periods or pay per view.

Hi fmackay,

Just a thought, but have you checked http://wc.rootsweb.com/ for this family? There is over 50 pages of listings for George Mackay. I scrolled through half of them and I didn't find a match with Janet Mason, but maybe its worth your while to have a look at the rest of the pages?

What I did find that was interesting was this, which may be a relative?

Hi Fiona,

I see you have the 1881 and 1911 census for Wilson and Penny Ann. I found the 1901 census with Wilson and his wife "Percy Ann". Compliments of Ancestry lol This census record gives the birthdates of everyone. I'd pm it to you if you like. Seems like a lot of MacKay's came to Oxford County, it's a big cattle and pig farming area.

Hi Fiona,
There is a death of a Janet McKay, age 80 on 25 Apr 1900, widow, born in Scotland, Heart failure, 2 days
This was in Kent County, Ontario

No proof that it's her, though... The informant was "Ford & Son", who were the informants for many on the same page-- undertakers, perhaps?

There is something else that leads me to believe this is not her, however.
In the 1881 census there is this household:

And then there is this George McKay death:
14 April 1886 age 82 farmer born Scotland
Huron County

It looks like the right family, although they are all transcribed as having been born in Scotland. No marital status is given for George, and it is marginally possible that Janet could just have been visiting another child at the census time and that he is not a widower...

Looks like Jane McKay Gilpin died in 1876

And I found the correct death cert for Janet Manson McKay. She died of consumption 8 Feb 1875 in Hullett, Huron, Ontario, age 57. Husband George McKay, farmer
