U.S. Military Service Records

Post by LynnC » Mon Jan 30, 2012 11:51 pm

Does anyone have any experience of ordering records from the U.S National Archives? What I think I'm interested in would be a Federal Military Pension Application - Civil War and Later Complete File (NATF 85D) https://eservices.archives.gov/orderonl ... Applet+FFO, but at a minimum of $75 and taking a while to process, I'm reluctant to go straight ahead. Particularly since my request would be complicated by a change of name and conflicting birth information - the forms don't seem to allow for detailing this sort of explanatory information, so without that context I could easily get nothing or completely the wrong person.

Anyone's experience of dealing with them would be appreciated.
Researching:
Gilhagie/Glasgow, Leckie/Stirlingshire, McFarlane/Dunbartonshire, Copland & Mcwhae/Kirkcudbrightshire, Algeo/Renfrewshire

Hello Lynn,

I don’t know much at all about US Military records but see this page with the comment right at the bottom about hiring someone and paying less than half and getting them faster. http://journeytothepastblog.blogspot.co ... itary.html

Hope that helps,
Alan

Hi Lynn,
I have only ordered those records once before, but that was back in the days before the price shot skyward... It all worked well, but took a month or two to come. The information found there turned out to be priceless, however, so I hope you have the same experience! The link Alan has posted looks very helpful.

All the best,
Sarah
