Hi debz,
In that case, it would be really helpful if you could clarify what exactly you know and how you know it.

1) Do you have the passenger list for when they came over? There is often important information on those forms, particularly in the 20th century.

2) Where did they settle in the U.S.? Where are they in the 1930 census?

3) Do you have their exact birthdates, so that their deaths can easily be found using those dates? If not, I would suggest you download them from scotlandspeople.co.uk

4) Do you know their occupations? This will help finding the correct ones in city directories as well as on the passenger lists.

5) Do you know the names of any of their spouses or children?

There are so many Smiths by the name of James, John and William coming from Scotland that it is virtually impossible for any of us who don't know the family details to find the right ones. You will have to help us out more here.

All the best,
Sarah

Do you have the exact date, i.e. month and day? For example, there are 304 people named James Smith in the Social Security Death Index who were born in 1906.

Was that the ship Columbia arriving in New York or some other ship in some other harbor? Boston? Philadelphia?
On the Columbia I only see a James Smith on line 8, age 18 who is already a U.S. citizen. It says he was naturalized at the Court of Common Pleas, Mercer County, N.J. on the 13 of March 1920. His home is 6th Avenue, Lakeside Park, Trenton, N.J. If this is the wrong one, does the record you have give an address?

In the 1930 census there is a James Smith, age 23, born Scotland, came to the U.S. in 1923, who is a Mariner with the U.S. Coast Guard in Brooklyn. But he is on a ship, so doesn't have another address.
