Hello all
I was recently contacted by a distant relative, (we both have the same gggrandfather) and the funny thing is he lives here in Perth, Western Australia.
Even putting our heads together we have both hit the same brickwall with our Barton family history.
Now all of you may be wondering why it is posted in the Americas thread. Well originally based on the 1881 Census, it was thought he was probably born in the Caribbean, but now with the 1871 Census it says James was born in U.S. America. But as we know, that could mean a lot of things.
So really it is a last ditch effort on tracing John and Martha, if that is even at all possible.
John Barton B/D Unknown
M Unknown place or time
Martha Dunlop B/D Unknown
Known Children (only ones I have to date)
James Barton B. Abt: 1831 based on DC D. 15 Aug 1889 Shotts Lanarkshire
John Barton B&D Unknown (I Can’t find where I got him from though)
Although there is an age discrepancy, (when isn’t there) between Censuses, so his birth year is a bit uncertain. In fact his age on his death certificate appears to be way out, as is his wife Margaret McLuckie’s.
At this point I won’t bother filling in the more recent long losts.

Hi Stewie
Sorry to get your hopes all up by making a post as I don't have any more new info on this one. I do recall it from last Spring though!! I'll be tying on my thinking cap to see if any new angles can be uncovered. Sure wish it was the family I found before St. Clair, IL......
Best wishes
Jean

Nae Worries Jean
I reposted this as there appears to be some information that James was actually born in the US. As per 1871 census, but of course this is only a guess But the fact that he is down as born U.S. America in the 1871 census is a bit more definite than the 1881 census where is down as born in St... the Americas

Hi Stewie,
You may have said this somewhere and I'm just not seeing it, but on James' death certificate, what occupation is given for his father John? Was he a coal miner also? I'm trying to find a way to recognize him on this side of the Atlantic and also give an educated guess which state he might be in.
Cheers,
Sarah

Hi StewL
I have been Searching my Grans (Elizabeth Barton) fathers family past and seem to have got stuck on a james barton who was married to Margaret McCluckie. Their son Alexander Bartons' son James barton was my Grans Father.
I think i might have broken down a little of the brick wall, I have sent you a private message as I am not to sure how this works
I am from Airdrie In Scoland

The search for James Barton in America is over.
It was a wild goose chase, due to misreading some census information.
It was the person above my James who was born in America, not my James
A cousin recently pointed out the errors of my ways
