Lost in Missouri .....

Post by Char » Tue May 31, 2005 7:18 pm

I have been trying to find my ggrandparents with no luck. My grandmother was Mary E. Golliher, grandfather was Alexander Sellers. They were married in Scotland Co., Missouri, 26 Sept., 1872. I have a copy of their marriage license. There is no marriage application. I have Mary's death certificate, no parents listed. I found her in the 1860/1870 Mo. census living with Sarah Spate/Speight,born Ohio. She is consistant in all census records that her parents were born in Tennessee. I have her birth/marriage/death dates.
Alexander Sellers was born abt 1850 in WV. I have all the census records from 1860 for him up to his death about 1918. Land records in New Mexico, but not much else.
I do have a lot of records for their children but can not find anything for their parents. Anyone have any suggestions? :?

Hello Char

Welcome to TalkingScot and we wish you great success with all your future research! It appears from your post that you've been unable
to find your grandparents birth records? A suggestion would be to contact the Tennessee State Archives, which has a Genealogy Department, for questions relating to History & Genealogy at referece.tsla@state.tn.us

If you are able to find the birth certificate for your Grandmother, Mary it should list her parents? Have you tried to search for her on the "IGI"

In regards to your Grandfather, Alexander's birth abt. 1850 in West Virginia, you may want to contact The Genealogy Surname Exchange Catagory at www.wvculture.org/history/wvsamenu.html or The Genealogy Corner listed at www.wvculture.org/history/archivesindex.aspx

Regards
Marilyn

You may find a birth of Alexander Sellers in the west of Virginia but not in West Virginia which didn't become the 35th state until 1863.

In 1870 I could only find one Alexander Sellers born Virginia, he was already married. Where did you find Alexander in 1860?
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Alexander Sellers (b abt 1849) had died, I believe in the Spanish Flu
epidemic in New Mexico but cannot find any death or burial information there. Mary E. (Golliher) Sellers died 14 Feb 1923 in Blackwell.
I have more for the children but no need to include that. Oh, the George
Sellers in the 1850 Jackson Co. Va/WV census is NOT the George Sellers in the 1860 Illinois census. I have confirmed that for sure.

Is there any possibility Alexander was originally named Washington? I notice that George W. is a regularly related name and it seems probable that W stands for Washington. There was a Washington Sellers of the correct age in Jackson county in 1850 (along with loads of other Sellers including a George and Nancy? of about the right ages). George and Nancy had a son called Washington but he seems to have become George W. in later censuses.

I have followed that whole family group(1850 Jackson Co. census) and NO.
Most went to Ohio. I also found documentation for them at the Sellers web site from another Sellers reseacher. Also, note in the 1860 census, George's birth would be 1793 and the one in Jackson Co. was born abt 10 years later. I know that there are differences on birthdays but not usually that much.
