Forums in New Zealand

Post by Adam Brown » Sun Feb 22, 2009 3:56 pm

I am looking for some help in getting close-up photographs of Scottish sculptor Thomas J Clapperton's statues in New Zealand.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a suitable forum in New Zealand which I could post a message on?

Regards

Adam

Hello Adam,

The only Clapperton statues in New Zealand I could find reference to were the two in Oamaru i.e. the Wonderland sculpture and the War Memorial.

No sign of a suitable N.Z. Forum although there’s something on the 1914-1918 forum. http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forum ... ded&start=

It looks like you beat me to this one. Lighting seems to be problem with many of these photos. http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/media/photo ... r-memorial

And with this memorial it looks like even the angle would have to be just right to give it the right interpretation. http://219.88.101.105/f3.html

Hope that’s useful,

Hello Adam,
The following site may be able to help you if one of the statues you are looking at is a War Memorial.
It is the Returned Services Association. What the British Legion is in U K.

Have you tried Random Acts of Genealogical kindness? I have had some very kind assistance from volunteers in Australia and England - I haven't tried NZ

Many thanks to you all for replying. Currie, yes as far as I know he only did the two statues in Oamaru. However I wonder if he did any other work too to help pay the bills whilst there? There may be smaller works such as busts, bas-reliefs or architectural sculpture.

If I only get nice close-ups of the Wonderland and war memorial scupltures I'll be very happy though.

I'll try the RSA for the war memorial but I suspect they will only direct me to what's on the internet already.

I hadn't heard of the RAOGK. I suppose that's the sort of thing I was thinking off. I'll give it a try.

Many thanks again for your help with this obscure request.

Kind regards

Adam

Hello Adam,

I’m not sure he would have travelled all the way to New Zealand for anything related to his occupation especially when he could have done all the work at home much easier and cheaper. Someone he trusted in N.Z. could easily have done the installation under direction if necessary. That may explain why there’s only the one N.Z. city with examples of his work. I can’t see any obvious sign of him on the outbound passenger lists to N.Z. or anywhere else post WW1. http://www.ancestorsonboard.com/

Here’s a Clapperton bust of John Buchan, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir.

All the best,
Alan

Maureen

Many thanks for your continued interest in this thread, finding images and your kind offer of help. I had to look up Oamaru to see if it was North or South island  and when I did I found the town had its own website and guestbook. I placed a request on the guestbook last night and someone has very kindly sent me some images already!

I'm glad to hear the RSA would have helped. I didn't mean to do them an injustice but from my own experiences of dealing with the RBL over here as part of the Scottish War Memorials Project although I know they would be keen to help it doesn't always come to anything. From the quick response I got from the website I'm sure I wouldn't have been disappointed by the RSA either though. I'll remember them for the future.

Alan

Many thanks for checking up on Clapperton. I remember reading something before about Clapperton that made me think he had gone to New Zealand and then on to California but it may have been the way it was worded and he did all his work from his studio in Scotland. I must have a root about to see what I can find. Actually given all the work he did on other memorials he probably didn't have time to sail around the World!

This is all about an entry on Clapperton in the Scottish Monuments, Memorials and Architectural Sculpture forum

http://scottishmonuments.s2.bizhat.com/ ... .php?t=121

We have quite a few images of his work already but the New Zealand ones were important commissions for him and need to be recorded too.

Kind regards

Adam
