John Macklam in Hawera, New Zealand

Post by Johnmac » Thu Jul 07, 2011 5:15 pm

Could anyone out there help please, I am trying to find out a little bit more about John Macklam born in Sunderland, England on 24 August 1833. According to family legend he left England under a cloud around 1857. Reason unknown. He arrived in New Zealand via Fiji in around 1857. He set up in business in Hawera in a block of buildings he called Sunderland House, as a Bookseller and Stationer. Some time ago I did find an entry in a business magazine for him. What I don't know is whether he married and had any family. He died on 30 September 1924 in Hawera and is buried there. In a codicil to his will he made a special bequest to his cousin, my great-grandfather, Charles Macklam. He is one of the many intrguing characters in my tree. Many thanks, Johnmac :)

Greetings from New Zealand.

Sorry don't have time to search for you now, but a quick look at ARCHWAY only found the New Plymouth Court 1924 Probate listing, which you refer to.

However PAPERS PAST comes up with 91 references the first page selection are all for HAWERA so presumably your man.

If I get it right you should be able to click on this link -

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bi ... --1----0--

The first listings included -

Hawera & Normanby Star, 6 April 1916

PS. A search for SUTHERLAND HOUSE gets 667 hits. Reduced to 35 for Hawera and Taranaki papers. Mostly simple regular adverts but this news item one note John's announcement about a retirement 25% off clearing sale. -

Hi Alan, I was thrilled to receive your message relating to my ancestor John Macklam. Your information has answered so many unanswered questions for me. I did not realise that he had been held in such high esteem. I am really proud to have him as an ancestor. If I may be cheeky to ask you, when convenient to you, if you could possibly make a search in the probate records for me, I would be extremely grateful. Once more very many thanks for all your time and effort in finding out so much for me. It is all so very much appreciated. Kindest regards, Johnmac [cheers]

Greetings John.

Only too happy to guide researchers to two very valuable search tools to NZ research. Easy to do as I have a quick cereal before going out to work on the farm. Out now to some fallen trees that came down in some windy weather we are having.

The ARCHWAY probate listing I referred to is this one -

http://archway.archives.govt.nz/SimpleSearchResults.do

if I ve got it right.

http://archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewEnt ... code=21954

just follow the instructions.

Hi again Alan many thanks again or the extra information. I've tried the sites you mentioned I'm not sure whether I can gain access to John's Probate record. Reading the instructions guide it would seem that I have to attend the office in person to view the appropriate record, I may have misunderstood the instructions, I don't know. But anyway many thanks again for all your help and time. Hope the trees didn't cause you too much damage. Kindest regards, Johnmac

Greetings again John.

I’ve been away on a buying mission for a few days, and will be travelling 350 km again tomorrow. I don’t plan on being in Wellington in the near future.

For help with a probate look see, I would suggest that you post the following, as a new request on this TS New Zealand forum, but with an Archives Wellington assistance request title. Hopefully some one who is going to do research in Wellington, can organize and have a look for you.

MACKLAM, John 1924 – 1924 ABAJ 21954 W4079 38 / 3346

Archives New Zealand, National Office, Wellington
10 Mulgrave Street
Wellington 6011

This link gives information about registering and having a file made available for viewing, and also about assistance with file look up and copying. It’s 20 years since I was last in an archives reading room, so not that familiar with current practise.

From this record page, if I read it correctly, the records are now held in the Wellington ‘Archive NZ’ storage, and not with the New Plymouth Court, where the probate was registered. Think in the case of my family probates, that I have been/are a trustee of, while they bear the mark of the local Court, all processing was done at Wellington.

Hi John

It may be worth contacting the archives directly yourself; these days most archives have some form of service whereby they can send copies of relevant documents to distant researchers, whether in paper form or digital form. It would be a good idea to to ask for an estimate of the cost of this; $20 per record seems to be the cost here, but I would think postage will need to be added if thecopy is in paper form.

See http://archives.govt.nz/research/orderi ... h-services
to find out about the services they offer.

Best wishes
Lesley
