For those with ancestors from New South Wales
The NSW Registry updates its online indexes each year in a similar fashion to SP. Births are now available to 1911, Deaths to 1981 and marriages to 1961. You can order certificates (within these time frames) online or as a cheaper option you can purchase certificate transcripts (either option somewhat more expensive than in Scotland)

Re: NSW BDMs
Thanks for the update on these Australian records. It may mean I have to warm up the credit card, although, it's not actually cooled off from the Christmas and post-holiday purchases.

Hi Frances
I just wish they could use the SP example for cost and access - maybe one day - hope you find something useful - I have a 1911 birth certificate I have been waiting to access.

Re: NSW BDMs
Thanks for that reminder Trish,
The NSW death index is very useful because it’s free and it has parent’s names. If the death was before 1955 you can search the years’ newspapers on Trove for a death notice. http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home
If you can’t find one, you may find a publication date or that of other notices in the Ryerson Newspaper Index published by the Dead Persons Society. It’s a work in progress but they have particularly good coverage of the Sydney area and the Sydney Morning Herald index is already pretty well complete for the years 1843-1857, 1879-1910, and 1953 to present. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nswsdps/dpsindex.htm
If things get desperate you could read this page although it’s getting less relevant as indexing progresses. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nswsdps/smh19c.htm
After 1955 the SMH can be accessed to 1990 via their pay site, or if you’re a resident free from home via State Library of NSW, or via Google News Archive where most of it appears to be online up to the end of the 1980s. GNA may however be more suitable for browsing to a known date rather than using the search facility. http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=l ... de=2&hl=en
Most deaths in the Sydney area after about the 1880s will have a death notice and maybe a separate funeral notice, published in the same or a following issue. Sometimes you may find a half column of funeral invites, one for each descendant family, with everyone listed by name.
You can do very nicely without ever laying hands on a death certificate.
All the best,
Alan

Re: NSW BDMs
Hi all
I have found my great uncle who died in NSW in 1936.
Unfortunately at a cost of $30 it will have to wait a bit longer.
It would be nice if, when I can get it, it has the names of his first and second wives on it

Re: NSW BDMs
Hi Stew
I use a transcript agent - transcript costs $17 which is still expensive cf SP but a little more realistic. The one I use is Laurie Turtle - I selected him at random years ago but have found his service A1 - usually takes just a few days to get the transcript - depending on which day he goes to the Registry. He also does research at the NSW archives for a lesser fee than the archives charge. If you only want the names of his wives, for a lesser fee you can request some details from the certificate. Then again, as you say, would the wives be listed - my grandmother put "unknown" on the certificate in relation to her husbands prior wives.
There are 3 agents listed here http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory ... ptionAgent
Are there any divorces in your uncles history? NSW details
http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/state-arc ... n-brief-77 - there is an index 1873-1923 - also the newspaper archives may help - I've found a few family divorces described in some detail. The "order to restore conjugal rights" being a common decision of the court.

Hi Trish
Thanks for that, I will keep that in mind if I decide to have a peek.
