Thank you very much Anne, for all the information. I didn't find much at the library as expected but if the Agnes Hearty I found in the 1851 census is the right one she was also born in Ireland? Her son was known in New Zealand as Thomas James, he died in 1933 in Wanganui. I live not too far from Wanganui and intend to see if the cemetery has any more info and if there are headstones for any of these people. Thank you once again.
Cheers Shona

Hi Shona,

Yes, Ann/Agnes was from Ireland which is why it's been so difficult to find anything going back.

Is this the information you found for the 1851 census?

1851 Census: New Dundyvan, Old Monkland
Mary Mooney, head, W, 25, Derry, Ireland
John Mooney, son, 4, Old Monkland, Lanark
Mary Mooney, daur, 2, Old Monkland, Lanark
Patrick Hearty, Lodger, U, 30, Labourer, Armah, Ireland
Agnes Hearty, Lodger, U, 25, Servant, Armah, Ireland
Helen McDonald, Lodger, U, 20, Servant, Armah, Ireland

Bridget Connell, Lodger, U, 20, Servant, Galway, Ireland
Catherine McAea??, Lodger, U, 2, Old Monkland, Lanark
Agnes Gardner, Lodger, W, 30, Servant, Armah, Ireland
Thos. Gardner, Lodger, U, 9, Armah, Ireland

1861 Census: 27 Numbers Garth, Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland, England
Susanah Jary, head, unm. 21, house servant, Ireland
Mary Ann Jary, daur, 3mos. Durham, Bishopwearmouth
John Dogherty, lodger, marr, 20, tinner, Northumberland
Mary Dogherty, lodger's wife, marr, 21, Wales, Newport
Anne Tracy, lodger, Marr, 29, hawker, Ireland
Thomas Tracy, lodger, unm. 6, Durham, Sunderland (Thomas should be about 3 yrs)
Catherine Tracy, lodger, unm. 2, Durham, Sunderland

I've never found James Tracey (Ann's husband) on any census record.

Let me know If you find headstones for this family - I'd love a snapshot if there is a headstone.

Good luck!

[cheers]
Anne

Hi again Anne,
The info I found about Agnes Ann was on the Ancestry site, but although it is worded differently it means the same (ie had born about 1826). I have been in touch with the Wanganui cemetery to-day but they didn't ring back so am hoping they will tomorrow. Other wise I will have to try and make time to go down and have a look my-self. If there are headstones I will be sure to send you pictures of them.
I am abit confused as to why Helen McDonald registered James and Agnes Ann twins? Is she Agnes Ann's niece? Also do you know how many siblings Agnes Ann had other than Patrick? Can believe it would have taken a lot of hunting to find them when they had the wrong spelling of the surname.
Agnes Ann became a family name as her grand daughter was called that too.
Thanks once again,
Shona
