Re: Russian Jews
Hello Shonastaffie and ![TS welcome [TS_welcome]](./images/smilies/TS_welcome.png)
Some of our members in Australia and New Zealand will no doubt be along soon with some suggestions for research there.
In the meantime, do you have any hints on how to research Russian Jews before they left Russia? I've been trying to trace the family of my son's fiancée and am not getting anywhere...
All the best,
Sarah

Re: Russian Jews
It might depend on which part of Russia they came from. Mine were from, what is now, the Ukraine. I discovered this because I obtained my GGgrandfathers naturalisation documents. Perhaps you should start with that - if you haven't already done so.
I also joined Jewish Gen and the Ukranian site on Facebook. Still searching though.
I obtained his marriage certificate through Scotland's People. I got the names of his parents from this. Then I contacted the Ukranian authorities to ask for advice. So far, no reply.
Now I have sent for his death cert. he died in Australia.
Have you tried Trove and the Ryerson Index for newspaper notices?
I feel that if I can trace a living relative - in Australia presumably - I could get more details re their Russian origins.
I think you could wait forever on a reply from Russia!!!!

Re: Russian Jews
Thanks for the suggestions. I have a notice of his naturalization in the London Gazette (they settled in London) but not the actual papers. Of course, they must have put down a birthplace in the application-- I hope. And if I'm extremely lucky, the parents' names might be there also! One of the problems is that they married and had one child before coming to England. He came first just in time for the 1911 census, but his family only came over a few years later. They died in London, but the death certs in England give so little information that I'm none the wiser.
I'll try to get the naturalization papers and see where that leads.
Best wishes,
Sarah
Later: Oh blah. Those records are closed for 100 years and he wasn't naturalized until 1927

Hi Sarah
That's tough!! Shame.
Sorry - I think I gave you some misleading advice. I thought the people you are trying to trace were resident in New Zealand or Australia. I now understand they were in England.
It is hard to trace Jews - even as in coming passengers - since they came via Europe and they generally weren't recorded. However, if they came via Germany there is a chance. I do recall that certain passenger lists from germany do exist. The names of the ships escape me. Google it. If I find out I will post on this site.

Re: Russian Jews
Thanks! It was a bit misleading me talking about this on the Australia and New Zealand forum
Unfortunately, at least family tradition has it that they came via France... I'll keep poking around on the Jewish Genealogy site and see what I find.
And excuse me for hijacking your topic! The folks in Australia and New Zealand should be getting up about now and can address your original question...
All the best,
Sarah

Re: Russian Jews
Not at all Sarah. No problem. Every little piece of advice is useful isn't it? Hope you get somewhere.
Hi Momat.
The Sigall family I'm looking for - different spelling but names do change over time - owned tobacconist shops in 131 Manners and in Cuba streets in the 1920 - 30's. Samuel and Lizzie.they lived in Lambton Quay and then in Scarborough st. And eventually in Waitoa Rd. Their kids were Louis (Ben) and Rachel. Ben married Myra Groom (can't find children). I think Rachel Married a man called Entwisle. Rachel was very musical I've found newspaper articles.
The family moved (not sure if they all went) to Australia' - NSW - after Samuel was declared bankrupt. This was around 1936. Samuel died in Marrickville NSW. His wife, Lizzie, in Tweeds Head. She had remarried a man called Peter solomon.
It would be good to know if the family you know are in any way related to my Sigalls.
