MELVILLEs from Sutherland .....

Searching for Catherine nee MELVILLE b. 1829 who m. James McKAY also of West Helmsdale in Edinburgh 1856 as well as brothers Donald b. 1830 , and Hugh b. 1831 who also may have emigrated to Australia. Apparently another branch of the MELVILLEs emigrated there so this bunch may have followed in their footsteps. George Hugh MELVILLE married Catherine McKINNON in Newcastle , NSW in 1863 He was Deputy Harbour Master according to death cert. of 1911. Children were Jane b. 1864 , Margaret b. 1865 , George Hugh b. 1868 , Florence b. 1870 and John b. 1871 all in Newcastle , NSW.

Any suggestions welcomed.

See my reply to your other post. West Helmsdale is 200 miles or more north of Edinburgh. Have you taken the parish name Loth to be an abbreviation for Lothian (the Edinburgh area)? Loth is a small parish on the North Sea coast of Sutherland.

My MELVILLEs were definitely from Loth in Sutherland. Catherine had been in service when I found her on the '41 census. Like her 3 sisters later who must have found work in Edinburgh they all married there.......two to local fellows from Loth( West Helmsdale) who went up to Edinburgh to tie the knot, A recently found relative says that George Hugh MELVILLE was her brother b. 1835 according to Australian records.I never saw him on the OPR.

We recently had a breakthrough in Australia but have to check out more facts before we can accept a George Hugh MELVILLE in NSW as being the Hugh we're searching for.

One of the MELVILLEs married a MURRAY so Christine knows all about that

My G grandmother's ( Isabella MELVILLE) mother was Jane McKAY but I have not been able to pinpoint her parents . Jane's marriage to John MELVILLE was in Portgower in 1828 and the only census she was on was the 1841 which doesn't help with details and the parish register gave no details on the marriage entry either unfortunately.
