A viaduct is indeed a bridge. Latin - to lead the way.

All photos appreciated, but March might be a little bit late. Was hoping to put up the wallpaper and paint the doors on TalkingScot before then.

Then again, we're growing all the time, so by March...

Send them in.

Bob

You're not the only one who thinks that your bridge is the best ....

‘The completely redesigned bridge that was started in 1883 remains one of the world's most distinctive structures and certainly can be classed as one of the wonders of the industrial world.’ ( http://www.chrishobbs.com/johnfowlerforthrail.htm )

Also apparently over 8 million rivets - I'm sure they could spare one for you!

The Buchanan Hotel

Thanks David and Bob.

My Great Grandmother, Jessie FITTON, appears on the 1881 Census at the Buchanan Street Hotel as a domestic servant / cook. More meat on the bones of the family tree and I'm glad I asked.

Regards,
Laura

I wish I could see you're bridge. I grew up in the vicinity of the only lift bridge in Newfoundland. It was very inconvenient when they did repairs and maintenance. Every summer the bridge would go up for 30 min to an hour then down for 10 min, then up again. This went on all day every day till they were done. As well as doing repairs they would also scrape, sand blast and repaint. What a nuisance. Does this happen with your bridge.
Of a more interesting note, I have a rather unusual photo of the Islandinger, the replica of the Norse ship. It was rather strange to watch her pass under the raised lift bridge. Mind you she had to sit back and wait to come in under the bridge to reach the dock (where all the dignataries waited ready to greet her). Time and tide may wait for no man but, the tide kept everyone waiting. The water level under the bridge was not low enough and the boat and everyone had to wait till it dropped enough to allow the Islandinger to pass under. I also have a photo of the Matthew (replica of John Cabot's ship passing under the bridge.
Well I hope this message goes out as it is my second attempt, the first one just disappeared and left me a message that the web page was not available.
