Where is Laughton, Renfrewshire?

Post by Hugo » Sun Nov 01, 2009 12:05 pm

I have someone born in Eaglesham, Renfrewshire according to the 1861 and 1881 census. However, in the 1871 census the birthplace is Laughton, Renfrewshire.

Needless to say, I cannot find Laughton. Can anyone help, please?

Hi Hugo
However, in the 1871 census the birthplace is Laughton
Just checking; this is on the original document - it is not a transcription on which this appears?

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Hugo

Since there is only one person on Ancestry in all the 1871 Scottish census indexed as born in Laughton I can only surmise it's a mistranscription...

Name: Mary Donnachie
Age: 42
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1829
Relationship: Wife
Spouse's name : James
Gender: Female
Where born: Laughton, Renfrewshire
Registration Number: 611
Registration district: Riccarton
Civil parish: Riccarton
County: Ayrshire
Address: Portlander Row
ED: 4
Household schedule number: 96
Line: 10
Roll: CSSCT1871_114
Household Members: Name Age
James Donnachie 45
Mary Donnachie 42
Michael Donnachie 21
Mary Donnachie 18
Peter Donnachie 15
Hugh Donnachie 13
Helen Donnachie 5
William Donnachie 2
Katherine Donnachie 5 M

This suspicion is borne out when you obtain the image of the orginal from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. You'll quickly see that it quite clearly reads Renfrewshire, Eaglesham which agrees with all the other records you have already obtained.

In other words....don't take Ancestry's indexes for the gospel truth without backing them up with a view of the original document!!!

Best wishes
Jean

Could this be LUGTON AYRSHIRE,just next to RENFREWSHIRE top of Gleniffer braes on Barrhead/Irvine rd??
Lugton is a nice wee village and local watering holes are called the Paraffin Lamp and the Lugton hotel, and yes,I have sampled both, lovely meals sold there!! :D

Greetings Lesley, Jean, and Nancy,
It was a transcription in Ancestry, I should have checked SP. My only excuse is that I was dashing to a lunch with some Norwegian friends (and am only now slowly recovering from the aquavite!)

If I remember right, Lugton is next to a village signposted Uplawmoor one way but Ooplaymoor coming back!

The first mention of Mary (ms DONNACHIE) is her marriage to James DONACHIE in 1845. However, I can find no trace of her in the 1841 Census nor any trace of her birth about 1830.

Ah weel, c'est la vie, Jimmy. C'est la vie.

Thanks for the help in clarifying this Laughton loose end.
Hugo
