I've been looking for parishes in Kinross (on GROS list of registration districts and parishes) - in particular Portmoak and in more recent times it appears to have moved to be part of Fife? Is this correct or do I misunderstand the numbers? - Are there any other lists or maps which show this - I'm having minor problems with the GROS file sorting out what the current RD relates to
thanks
Trish

Re: Changes in Registration Districts
Hello Trish,
It appears that Portmoak straddled the boundary of Kinross and Fife and was adjusted in 1891. http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/relat ... d=10209912
In 1891 Portmoak was reduced to enlarge Kinglassie. The area transferred was “The aforesaid detached part of the parish of Portmoak and of the county of Kinross, and also those portions of the parish of Portmoak and of the county of Kinross lying to the south of and adjoining a line drawn along the centre of the new channel of the River Leven (known as The Cut), in an easterly direction from the point at which the said river enters the county of Fife until it meets the boundary of the parish of Leslie.”
Not sure if that helps,
Alan

Re: Changes in Registration Districts
Hi Trish,
As Alan points out above, the county and parish boundaries were tidied up in 1891 following the requirements of the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1889. The effects of these changes were detailed in the book Boundaries of Counties and Parishes in Scotland by Hay Shennan, published in 1892. As well as the boundary changes, this book details which properties in rural areas transferred to different parishes and/or different counties.
Historic counties: pre-1891: http://maps.nls.uk/os/view/?sid=74489037
Administrative counties: post-1891: http://maps.nls.uk/os/view/?sid=74489039
Present day: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=31 ... pp=map.srf
In 1975, as a result of the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973, the administrative counties of 1891 were done away with and replaced by regions and districts. The regions and districts were done away with in 1996 following the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1994. The two modern changes make it more difficult to follow which registration districts transferred to which council area. To add to the problem, across the years, particularly in more recent times, registration offices have been closed and centralised into larger offices covering wider areas; thus many smaller registration districts have disappeared as they have been amalgamated.
The boundary between Fife and Kinross-shire which was settled in 1891 is still mostly the same line as that which separates the current day council areas of Fife and Perth & Kinross.
All the best,
AndrewP

Re: Changes in Registration Districts
Thank you Alan and Andrew - very much, just what I needed - It was the 1891 change that might have caused me grief. I doubt if I'll ever understand the changes from 1974 onwards in both England and Scotland - but I can try to follow the earlier ones. I've now bookmarked all the links so hopefully will not keep asking the same questions as they contain so much information.
Trish
