Where is RITTMORE in Argyll?

Post by Billiegirl » Mon Dec 22, 2014 4:01 am

Hello and Season's Greetings to everyone on Talking Scot! :D

I have a merchant seaman's listing which says the subject was born in Rittmore, Argyll.

I've done a search but nothing comes up for it at all. I think I need some local knowledge, can anyone help?

Good morning,
Are you reading handwriting or a transcript someone else made of handwriting? If so, my thought would be that it could be Kilmore, since a capital K and R often look the same and a stray line can make an 'l' look like a 't'. Maybe someone will know of a Rittmore, but otherwise I would try to work out if there could be some error in reading the word.

Best wishes,
Sarah

Hi Sarah, yes, it looks like a general register of merchant seamen which includes those ticketed in other places besides Greenock, so its probably a transcription from the original record, which I haven't seen.

It definitely looks like Rittmore on this one, and FMP has transcribed it as such, too. Maybe a mistake on the part of the record keeper? Argyll is spelt Argyle, too.

I'm wondering if Rittmore is one of those "lost places", as its dated 1845. I must admit though, it doesn't sound very Scottish!

Sorry Sarah - I think I need new glasses! Having had a better look at it, the merchant seamen are all from Greenock (I thought some said Greenwich). It could be a K instead of a R. There is a line through the middle of the entire word, so it could be Killmore - a misspelling of Kilmore?

Any idea which parish in Argyll Kilmore would be in?

I don't pretend to know this area, but on GENUKI you have the choice between:

Kilmore and Kilbride:
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/ARL/Ki ... dKilbride/

Kilninian and Kilmore:
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/ARL/Ki ... ndKilmore/

or even, if you want to stretch a point, Kilmorich:

Happy reading! GENUKI is a great source.

All the best,
Sarah

It looks a though he was registered in Oban as both of the first two Sarah gave you relate to that area. A relative of my wife's was registered there and became the harbour pilot for the port of Oban. Lots of islands to negotiate as you come into the harbour there. It's a georgeous part of the west coast.

In rough terms:
  • Kilninian & Kilmore - Isle of Mull (Tobermory area)
Kilmore and Kilbride - Oban area
Kilmorich - at the head of Loch Fyne
All the best,

Thanks so much Sarah, Russell and Andrew - gives me a bit more to work with. Yes, a beautiful part of the world, hope to make it over there one day.

Just wanted to mention, Ancestry is free for the next 2 or 3 days.

Wishing everyone a wonderful Christmas and a very Happy New Year! :P
