Donald Wallace and Arisaig

Post by BruceW52 » Tue Jul 18, 2017 3:03 am

My first post.
My grandfather, Donald Wallace, was born at Gortenachaolish near Arisaig in 1861. I have the birth certificate. On the 1871 census it states that he was born at Ardnamurchan, Invernesshire. Was Arisaig in Ardnamurchan in those days? Thank you. Bruce Wallace, Sydney, Australia.

Hi Bruce,

[TS_welcome]

Yes, Arisaig was in Ardnamurchan parish in the County of Argyll. Ardnamurchan parish (no.505 in the GROS index) was a huge parish, and was split into four districts: Acharacle, Arisaig, Strontian, and Ardnamurchan Wester. I am guessing that three of these districts had a Quoad Sacra church, answerable to the main Ardnamurchan Parish Church.

In the GROS index from 1855 to 1899, Arisaig was number 505/2. Then the county boundary was re-drawn in 1900 to take Arisaig registration district into Inverness-shire, and in the GROS index, it was re-numbered registration district 91b, which it remained until 1970. In 1971 it was renamed Mallaig registration district and became RD number 104 for that year (presumably the registrar's office moved from Arisaig along the road to Mallaig). Upon renumbering of the GROS index, it became RD number 238 from 1972.

All the best,

AndrewP
