Hi iluvu2

A warm welcome on a cold day to TalkingScot :!:

I have a line of Rankin's via my grandmothers side and silly question maybe but have you looked for them emigrating ? a huge chunk of mine went to New Zealand and a smaller amount to Canada.

Just a thought for now....

Hi iluvu2,
Welcome to talking Scot! You're right, they were abducted by aliens... [alien] I can't find them anywhere.

One question might help us: You say that Margaret is your great grandmother. Where did her son/daughter who was your grandfather/grandmother end up in life? Still in Scotland? Or in another country?

All the best,
Sarah

The 1881 shows 2 Roberts Shanks living with an Agnes of the correct ages but the 1891 only shows 1.

Have you looked this one?

Regards,
Annette M

Hi Annette,
I'm confused-- Did you mean Robert Shanks living with his wife Margaret? Or do you mean his daughter Agnes who was age 4 in 1881?

All the best,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,

If you're confused now just wait................................

In 1881 there are 2 Robert Shanks (one aged 32 and one -our man - aged 29) both with a daughter named Agnes (one aged 5 and the other -living with our man - aged 4)
I did a search on SP in 1891 and there are 2 Robert Shanks. Only one aged 40 is living with an Agnes aged 5.

Could be either man so I thought it was worth a check.

Hope you understand this.

Kind regards,
Annette

Okay... my head is still spinning, but I think I understand!
That must be this household:

1891
67 Gibson St, Partick, Govan, Lanarkshire
Robert Shanks, 42, Head, born Slamananon, Stirlingshire, Baker
Sophia M G Shanks, 31, Wife, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire
Maggie A Shanks, 18, Daur, born Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Baker's (Shopwoman)
Agnes R Shanks, 15, Daur, born Newarthill, Lanarkshire, Baker's (Shopwoman)
Jessie A Shanks, 10, Daur, born Chapelhill, Lanarkshire, Scholar
Isabella A Shanks, 6, Daur, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scholar
John Shanks, 2, Son, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire

Robert was a coal miner in 1881, so doesn't look likely, although one would wish that such a career change was open to him!

1881
West Longrigg 42, New Monkland Landward, Lanarkshire
Robert Shanks, 29, Head, born New Monkland, Lanarkshire, Coal Miner
Margaret Shanks, 30, Wife, born Slamanan, Stirlingshire
Robert Shanks, 7, Son, born New Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scholar
Agnes Shanks, 4, Daughter, born New Monkland, Lanarkshire
James Shanks, 2, Son, born New Monkland, Lanarkshire

Cheers,
Sarah

Hi,

I think I have found your family migrating to Queensland Australia in 1883 on the ship Otago. With a added member to the family baby John.

Found on site below

http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/research ... ration.asp

Also BDM"s information on this site.

http://www.justice.qld.gov.au/bdm/IndexSearch.htm#

There is a death for young Robert passed away in 1909 also Baby John must have died not long after they arrived he was 9 months old.

There is also 3 other children born in Australia Isabella,Margaret Rankin, & Jeannie possibly 6 in all but the name of Ranker for mothers name is showing for the last 3. These names are Mary Hunter, Alexander & Frederick. It could have easily be mistranscibed.

If you have any difficulty in tracing the info I have given you.. get back to me its no trouble.

cheers
Alison
