I have hit a brickwall.

My Scottish Family immigrated to Australia in about 1865 and settled in Maryborough, Queensland.

The only original records that I have on my great grandparent's, William THOMSON (cc1832/33) and Jessie Laing (cc 1837), is their marriage certificate, married March 1863, UPC at Hutchesontown, Tradeston, Glasgow (also confirmed from LDS site). There are no birthplaces listed on the marriage certificate.

At time of marriage:
William THOMSON lived at 13 Hospital Street, Glasgow, and was 30 years of age.
Jessie Laing lived at 17 Wellcroft Place, Glasgow, and was 25 years of age.

Parents:
James THOMSON (deceased) & Esther CALLANDER.
William LAING & Ann VINE.

I believe that:
William THOMSON born 1832/1833, Belfast, Ireland
Jessie Laing, born cc 1837, Glasgow, Scotland

I have no idea where James & Esther (CALLANDER) THOMSON were born.

I found listings on the LDS of a James & Esther (CALENDAR) THOMSON and the birth of Thomas O'Neill 1823, and Margaret 1833. But, no leg in the door for William THOMSON.

It's believed that:

1851 Census: William Laing was born at Cramond, Midlothian and Anne VINE at Fisherow, Midlothian, which I believe is located at Inveresk With Musselburgh.

1861 Census: William and Ann LAING is recorded as Edinburgh.

I found a LDS entry William LAING 1807, parent John & Jean COOK LAING with three siblings Alexander 1805, Andrew 1800, and George 1803.

It's noticed that Alexander LAING had a daughter Jessie LAING,born 1837, Montrose, Angus. But no record of William & Ann LAING having daughter, Jessie Laing. I am wondering if Jessie was left with William and Ann and is the daughter of Alexander.

Can anyone help.

I am trying ascertain:
William THOMSONs birthplace and record.
James THOMSON birthplace and death and marriage.
Esther Callander birthplace and death and marriage.

This Aussie is going around in circles at the moment.

I am trying ascertain:
William THOMSONs birthplace and record.

The 1861 census would perhaps be worth looking for as that should state a birthplace. (if he was in Scotland by then!)

Hi Sarah,

Sorry I meant to post them.

James THOMSON, deceased, was a Flesher. (Master)
William THOMSON was a Flesher (Journeyman)
William Laing was a Blacksmith (Journeyman)
Jessie Laing was a Machine Sewer in a Gutta Percha Work

Hi Lesley,

I am in Australia and have no access to the 1861 Scottish Census records, but I do assume that he was living in Scotland then, but he could have been moving around as he was a Flesher (Journeyman).

Thank goodness for the internet! Those of us not living near Scotland still have easy access to the records, irregardless of where we live. Click on the link at the top of this page for Scotlands People…it is a pay to view site, but well worth it

I had a quick look at the 1861 census on Ancestry and there are a few Williams born in Ireland, but I don't think any of them are your William. If you don't already have Jessie on 1861, you will find her living with her parents, William and Ann Laing along with their young eight-year old son at 87 Stirling Street, Glasgow.

You can access all the Scottish census records online and download the original pages at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (a pay per view site) and also transcriptions of the Scottish census at Ancestry.

In addition, you can order any census microfilms from any LDS family history centre for a small fee, but you do need to have a good idea what district of Scotland you are looking in, in order not to spend the rest of your life scrolling through film!

Sorry, the only James Thomson I can find who is married to Esther is a Cotton Spinner in Busby, Renfrewshire. He was born in Ireland abt 1817, which puts him a tad young to be William's father anyway.

There is a William Thomson age 8 in 1841 who is living in Stevenston, Ayrshire. He was born in Ayrshire, but both his parents were born in Ireland. His mother is Esther, but his father is unfortunately Francis, and a labourer not a flesher

There is a confusing Este Thompson age 57 in 1861, born in Ireland, who has a daughter Mary Gunn and a son Edward Higgins, as well as two grandchildren with the surname Forsyth...

Sorry, not much help here. If William came over from Ireland, it is possible that his parents remained there-- in which case it may be very difficult to track them down.. Maybe someone else will find something I have missed. I have to admit I have not trawled through all the English censuses, since you can't search by occupation and Thomson is such a common name.

I can see you had just as much frustration as I have had in regards to the THOMSON family. William THOMSON is like John SMITH.

Just reiteration what I have esatblished from family records and already said above that he was:

William THOMSON possibly born, Belfast, Ireland, cc 1833.

William THOMSON's parents are James & Esther (CALLANDER) THOMSON.

William THOMSON served during the Crimean War.

William THOMSON married Jessie Laing in 1863 at the United Prebyterian Church at Hutchesontown, Glasgow.

William THOMSON lived at 13 Hospital Street, Glasgow in 1863.

Jessie LAING lived at 17 Wellcroft Place, Glasgow in 1863.

Jessie LAING was possibly born, Glasgow, c 1837.

Jessie LAING's parents are William & Ann (VINE) LAING.

William THOMSON in 1863 was a Flesher (Journeyman).

James THOMSON was as Flesher (Master)

William THOMSON's father James THOMSON passed away before he was married in 1863.

What I have established from internet searches, but not certain:

William LAING, Ann LAING, and Jessie LAING listed on the 1851, and 1861 Scottish Census.

William LAING, born Cramond, Midlothian 1811 or Edinburgh 1808. LDS has 1807, Cramond, Midlothian(??).

Ann/Anne (VINE) LAING, born Fisherow, Midlothian 1808 or Edinburgh 1808. LDS has 1807, Inveresk With Musselburgh, Midlothian(??).

Jessie LAING, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire 1837. LDS has 1837, Montrose, Angus daughter of Alexander & Jane/Jean (OGILVY) LAING.

Is there a possibility that Jessie was reared by William and Alexander, who is listed on the 1851 Census, was just visiting at the time. Possibly Alexander's wife may have passed away soon after Jessie's birth and William and Ann took the responsibility in raising Jessie(??).

Any further help will still be gratefully appreciated.
