The Sinclairs

Post by garydevine1995 » Wed Mar 02, 2011 12:21 am

I am finding it hard to find my great grandmother helen roy sinclair in the 1901 census i dont no where she would have been at the time but she was born in kilmacolm in 1898 her parents were peter sinclair and sarah mccallum. i have even tryed to find some of her siblings but i dont even no any names hahaha i have just been guessing which is annoying

parents were married 1895 in Anderston and thats all i can find i gran said she had a brother called Roy and two sisters called sissy/sissi and tina but i dont think those wre there real names and it wasnt just them there was about 12 of them so its even harder :(

When you search for Peter Sinclair second person forename Sarah there are only 5 results.
If you search Peter Sinclair second person forename Helen there are 8 results.
If you search for Sarah Sinclair second person forename Helen there are only 2 results
These are without narrowing down a place where they could be.

Have you checked these and discounted them ? Not too many in the scheme of things - it could be worse !

Hi Gary,
I think she is with her grandparents in 1901:

13 Albyn St, Glasgow Govan
Peter Sinclair, 51, Head, born Crieff, Perthshire, Harness Maker
Hellen Sinclair, 49, Wife, born Crieff, Perthshire
George S Sinclair, 19, Son, born Glasgow, Mason
Hellen R Sinclair, 10, Daur, born Glasgow, Scholar
Hellen Sinclair, 4, Grand Daur, born Glasgow

Notice the double 'l' in the name Hellen-- I've seen that quite often. It's always a good idea to search for hel*n so that you get hits for helen, hellen, helin, etc. Also, Helen and Ellen were often interchangeable, so it is worthwhile searching for both. I sometimes use *el*n to cover all possibilities.

All the best,
Sarah

You're going to have trouble finding her parents Peter and Sarah, also, since they aren't together census night either :D I think Peter, being a plumber, was fixing the plumbing in a hotel and Sarah was at home with the other three children, one of whom looks to be the "Tina" you mentioned (although Ancestry has her transcribed as "Lina".) This is a case where it definitely pays off to have a search on Ancestry at the library before buying the image on Scotland's people, since it turns out you need images of three different households to find the entire family.

Good luck,
Sarah

boys: Peter
Alec
Roy
Robert
girls: Agnes McLellan
Mary
Christina - Tina
Sissy - dont know her real name
Helen Roy
Margaret - i think called Peggy

i know Agnes s the oldest becausei just found her birth cert from 1896 and she was born in kelvin, glasgow :)

Agnes, Nellie and "Lina" (=Tina?). That should help you find them on ScotlandsPeople.

Another interesting thing, given the names you found on her death record, is that Sarah is listed as Sarah M C Sinclair-- aha! There's than intriguing "Maitland Colquhoun" again-- you have some more detective work to do!

You will find both Peter and Sarah in Argyll.

Sarah

Well, that question turned out to be complicated... since the Ancestry transcription has them in South Knapdale, which is not one of your choices. So I did a search on SP, getting no hits for any of the people at the hotel in South Knapdale. They all turned out to be in Tarbert. On the Ancestry transcription Peter is said to be 26 years old, but there is no such person on SP. So he's got to be the 28 year old in Tarbert. Fingers crossed!

Sarah
