FLETCHER & MCNICOL Glen Orchy

Hello,

My 3x great grandparents were Angus FLETCHER and Margaret MCNICOL who married at Glen Orchy on January 20, 1820. (I have the OPR record from scotlandspeople.) I know they had a family.
1)Their son, Alexander FLETCHER, went to Mull and worked for a relative, Duncan FLETCHER, at Glen Aros, married Catherine MCPHAIL and had 10 children.
2)Their son, Duncan FLETCHER died single at Southend, Argyll at age 37 in 1872. (I have the death reg. from scotlandspeople.)
3) Their daughter, Euphemia FLETCHER, married a MCNIVEN.
4) They had another son, John FLETCHER, born 1826 I believe, but have had no luck finding him through scotlandspeople ... his name is just a bit too common I think. I am interested to know what became of him.

I was hoping to find a death for either Angus or Margaret after 1855. It would be wonderful to learn who their parents were, if possible. Angus' parentage especially would provide a missing link that has been long sought after by my family. Thank you very much for any clues!

The IGI shows an Angus Fletcher marrying Anne McPhail in Feb 1841 on Jura
which ties in with the above census.
Any relation to Alexander's employer?

Mary - Wilma's find in the 1841 census, may give you a bit of help in selecting the most likely Angus Fletcher birth record fits from the IGI.

From ScotlandsPeople "enumerators in 1841 were instructed to round down all given ages of 15 and above to the nearest five (e.g. 28 should have been recorded as 25), If a person were lying about their age this, combined with the rounding down, can severely distort the actual age and send you off on a wild goose chase! Conversely, you may find that the rounding down instruction was not always strictly adhered to".

There are many options for birth records for both Mary Mcnichol and Angus Fletcher, that may help to put you in the right direction.

ScotlandsPeople does have a birth record for Effie for the date given on the IGI; and the record of Angus and Margaret's wedding also match with the IGI.

You can hopefully do a sideways search for Margaret McNicol's parents as it looks like Duncan is living with his Aunt Barbara McNicol in 1861 at Helensburgh. She appears to be the wife of John McNicol born Glen Orchy about 1789. Looks like he died at Row in 1860.

Here is John in 1851 at Ardincaple Lodge, Row-

This is my first post on TalkingScot.com. I sorry I'm a few years late in replying to this thread!
My 3xggfather was John Fletcher from Glenorchy. On his marriage certificate of 1861 (Victoria Australia) he says his parents are Angus Fletcher & Margaret McNicol. He says he's 31, making his birthdate 1830. I really haven't had a lot of success in connecting him to the John with a christening date of 1826. My John married had 7 children then died in a flood (so the story went). His youngest child was born 1874. A John Fletcher drowned in 1875 and was 50 years old and born Kent England. After much research and asking family I believe it's the same man. (Still could be wrong). I found the "Jura" family 1841 Census and that matched the people I had just couldn't reconcile being on Jura - now it makes sense with a second marriage.
Hoping the previous people who post will read above and their "John" mystery solved?
